I've seen countless concerts over the decades (I'm also a full-time musician) and what I experienced in Adrienne's solo event was truly remarkable. She is not only a songwriter with a gift for compelling melodies, arresting lyrics, and a rich harmonic palette, but a vocalist with fabulous technique and a range of colors (often within a single piece) that few singers posses. Adrienne is unique in her range of styles that covers alt pop, folk, and gospel-inflected styles, but also traditional Iranian songs, along w/ her own settings of Sufi poetry by Hafez. Some of her songs deftly traverses the line between traditional Persian music and her own Western influences, including the mixing of Farsi and English to astonishing affect. Finally, Adrienne is a consummate performer who simultaneously embodies mastery far beyond her years with equal measure of vulnerability. There is a Universe in her voice . . .

About Adrienne Shamszad
An Oakland, California native of Iranian heritage, Adrienne Shamszad sings revolutionary anthems, prayerful power ballads, blues, lullabies, and love songs in English and in Farsi. Her strong and soulful voice, expressive guitar work and bold performance style have made her a popular West Coast performer for over a decade.
Her musical artistry is indeed something to behold. She is mystical, yet earthy. At one moment lofty, the next low-down. Adrienne’s poetry is intimate and genuine, inspired by the mystic Poets of Iran as much as the folk poet-songwriters of the 60s and 70s. She can transform a stage into a sacred place with the magic of her voice. Then, she sweeps you away on a musical journey through improvisation, folk melodies, Indian mantra, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and Iranian classics.
Her mixed cultural background, international travels, and deep love of people reside in her music. It can open listeners’ hearts to the unfamiliar and, in doing so, invite more understanding, courage and curiosity into this world. Since beginning formal training in Traditional Iranian vocal arts and music in 2016, Adrienne's music has expanded to a genre of its own as she brings the messages of her ancestors into the present moment.
In 2018, Adrienne won the Living Cultures grant through the Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA) to deepen her study of Iranian Classical singing with master teacher and vocalist Mahsa Vahdat. She showcased her bi-lingual repertoire on the Freight and Salvage stage in August of 2019 to a full house.
Adrienne is coming back to serenade the Freight with her band after so many months of lock-down, and with as many new songs to share.
Adrienne is an Oakland, California native of Persian heritage who has traveled extensively, studying theater, music and dance throughout Asia, India and the Middle East. Her mission is clear: to weave together the threads of her study and creativity into an original musical fabric that moves and inspires her audiences. Her impressive musical range extends from the sacred to the profane, the mystical to the earthy, the lofty to the down-low, and she is equally at home with acoustic or electric, improvisation, singing gospel, Indian mantras, rock and roll, rhythm and blues and Persian classics.
