About Sumner
Tasmanian alternative electronic duo Sumner (Chloe Wilson & Jack McLaine) have “developed a keen grasp of brooding, addictive melody” – (Mixdown Magazine). With their blend of detailed electronic production, rich acoustic sounds, and honest lyrics, Sumner’s compelling songwriting continues to captivate a growing audience.
Sumner caught the attention of the music world in 2018 releasing their debut single ‘Pictures’ and EP ‘All That I Am’. Their calming, dexterous production and songs compared to the likes of Frank Ocean and Lorde. Sumner was awarded the 2018 Josh Pyke Partnership Grant based on their production skills, evocative vocals and “practical and achievable” business plan. Shortly after this, they showcased at Big Sound and EMC (Electronic Music Conference). In late 2018, Sumner independently released the self-produced single ‘Put It Out’, which received spot play on Triple J and a feature artist slot on Unearthed.
Steadily releasing singles from this point, their 2021 release Stranded reached a new level for the duo, amassing over 1 million streams online, and a heavy amount of airplay, being featured as Triple J’s most played song for over one week. Stranded is the first of a string of singles co-written and produced by PNAU as Sumner became the newest signing to Lab78, the label started by Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes of PNAU, in partnership with Australian indie label Etcetc.
“Pete and I came across this band while on tour in regional Tasmania. We shared a stage together at the Forth pub on a sweet breezy day a few years back. We were struck by their fierce intensity. Chloe commanded the stage conjuring notes of Chrissie Hynde, Iggy Pop and Karen Finley. Jack the uber-cool, multi-instrumental wonder dazzling on any synth/bass or guitar he picks up and plays.” (Nick Littlemore, 2021)
Over the years, Sumner has supported the acclaimed Vera Blue, PNAU, Montaigne, Slowly Slowly, George Maple and performing at Party In The Paddock and Falls Festival; Sumner’s live show is warm, energetic, vulnerable and addictive, leaving audiences wanting more.
