About Higher Ground

1) HIGHER GROUND was formed in 1998 by West Country singer-songwriter, Uno Annalon.

Uno combines brilliant songwriting skills with a unique style of music, inspiration and an air of magic and mystery.
Together with the other band members they created a distinctive and powerful sound. Inspired by the legends and myths of King Arthur and his Knights of The Round Table, their debut album Torr Stories gained an enthusiastic following.
Critics have favourably compared Higher Ground to the Moody Blues.

2) The HIGHER GROUND story began in the town of Sandviken, Sweden in late 1994 when
drummer Erik Pettersson, guitarist Niklas Hammarberg, bassist Petter Eriksson and
keyboardist Ulf Merkell were playing together in a cover band and looking for a
new vocalist. When Peter Lindberg answered an advertisement in a local newspaper,
HIGHER GROUND finally was completed. After only 3 months, in early 1995, the band
recorded their first demo. Later the same year another demo saw the light of day.
In 1996, HIGHER GROUND went into the studio armed with 6 songs which they recorded
live and which led to them landing a deal with ProActive Records.
Released in remixed form in mid 1997, these six songs formed the “Keep On Walkin'” E.P.,
which received considerable critical acclaim. The band started work on their debut album
in 1998. Over 18 months in the making, the album was preceded by a limited edition 3
track single 'Ghost In My Head' (released in April 2000) which also featured an exclusive acoustic version of “Keep Walking” from the 1997 E.P. HIGHER GROUND's debut full length album “Perfect Chaos” was released in May 2000.
Now, HIGHER GROUND are back with their 2nd full length album “A Thousand Pieces” which
was recorded from October 2003 - June 2004 at Vaxjö, Sweden at Downtown Studios. The band has during 2007 recorded a couple of new songs and planning a new album in a near future.

3) The roots of Higher Ground were established late in the summer of 1996, when a diverse group of talented musicians found they shared an interest in pursuing a common musical direction. While the band plays a variety of bluegrass oriented tunes, they expand their musical taste beyond the scope of traditional, hard driving songs, to include original and contemporary selections. Their philosophy remains one of developing interesting arrangements of lesser known songs, and adding something new and unique to standard bluegrass tunes. As well, Higher Ground performs a selection of original material penned by members of the group. The band took first place at the Santa Fe Bluegrass festival in 1996 and again in 1998. A few personnel changes have ensued over the past four years, with three members recently joining the group. In October of 1999, Dave Devlin, on mandolin, and Diane Lujan, on lead and harmony vocals, joined Higher Ground. The newest member is Fred Bolton, from White Rock, who joined the group in December of 1999, bringing a solid guitar, lead and harmony vocals. The resultant combination is an eclectic blend of truly accomplished musicians who enjoy watching all the pieces of a tune fall naturally into place. Each member brings new ideas to old standard tunes, as well as thoughts on how to put the most into original or contemporary selections. From diverse backgrounds, Higher Ground performs an interesting array of traditional, original and contemporary bluegrass tunes. With four members providing vocal contributions, the swapping of lead and harmonies offers something new and appealing for each song in their repertoire.
