Gozu trekked across the country from Massachusetts to play 5 songs at the Launchpad in ABQ, and on a Monday no less! And they did it for all 15 of us that showed up to support them. But this didn't slow them down even a little. They took the stage by storm, with the drummer raining down upon us all like the God of Thunder, dropping beats that hit us like hailstones with the weight of kettle bells. He hammered away directly behind the bass player, who stood front and center, hailing from the farthest corner of the map. He is the bearded berserker of Maine and does not suffer fools who idly consider the heavy strings of carnage. He plucked them with vengeance, just as he did the chords that cracked skulls, from bar to bar. To one side, the lead vocals and second guitar came out swinging with both fists, forging an iron-clad, double-edged sword of rhythm and melody that could take your head off like a well-swung battle axe. A constant head-bobbing lead guitar on the other side, in the style of Malcolm Young of AC/DC fame, was giving no quarter, ripping lick after shredding lick, laying waste to all feeble conceptions of progressive doom metal anyone may have previously held. Gozu is not for the faint of heart and redefines the genre of heavy metal to the point that it may require a new term to adequately describe it. Original, stout, and seriously compelling. I can't get enough of their insightful interpretations of this sound and I am deeply grateful that they chose to venture far and wide to share their music with me, here in the high desert.

About Gozu

Gozu first emerged on the scene in 2010, after the release of their seven track, self-titled EP, Gozu heave the rock yet embody the soul on songs like human-liberation anthem “Rise Up”, and the D.A.R.E.-baiting “Meth Cowboy”. Fronted by Marc Gaffney vocals and guitar, Doug Sherman on guitar, Joe Grotto on bass, and Mike Hubbard on drums, Gozu’s sound is tailor-made for blasting out the car speakers via international radio airwaves. That music pulling up alongside you while walking the street minding your business, demanding that you get in the goddamned car. You come-to after two lost days on the side of a dirt road, dazed and bruised.

Small Stone Records soon snapped up Gozu, releasing their critically acclaimed album "Locust Season" that same year. Gozu spent the next year touring the Northeast with bands like St. Vitus, Pallbearer, Lo Pan, Storm of Light, Helmet, Elder, Mos Generator, Church of Misery, and Fu Manchu.

Shadowing the success of Locust Season, Gozu returned to the studio in 2013, recording their sophomore full-length album "The Fury of a Patient Man". Fury displays Gozu still driven by Gaff’s butter melting melodies and Doug’s mega-thick riffs, but with an expanded scope. Whether it’s a 24-minute deconstructed jam of “The Ceaseless Thunder Of Surf”, or the High on Fire-style gallop of “Charles Bronson Pinchot”, the band had paved their way to new musical terrain. Gozu’s songs have aired on national television, broadcast via MTV (Road Rules, Dudesons, Real World), NBC, and NASCAR. They have been nominated for numerous awards, as well as twice- invited to perform at the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) international media and music festival in Austin, TX. Late 2014 sends Gozu off on their first European tour, performing at both Roadburn in Tilburg, Netherlands, and DesertFest Berlin with Yob, Church of Misery and Kvelertak.

Gozu headed into Wild Arctic Studio in 2015, working with Dean Baltulonis (Primitive Weapon, Sick Of It All, Hatebreed) to record their much-celebrated third album, “Revival” (Ripple Music).

The year 2016 has brought Gozu front and center in the heavy rock and metal world. Gozu embarked on their second European tour, with Portland, Oregon’s own Holy Grove. Conquering seven countries to perform 20 shows in 20 days was a giant success to add to Gozu’s list of accomplishments.

This year also delivers Gozu into a new relationship with Laurens Kusters’ management company Brooklyn Larry (Sick Of It All, Street Dogs).

Gozu now announces a new development in their signing on with Blacklight Media, a brand-new imprint from Metal Blade Records. Blacklight Media was founded by celebrity chef Chris Santos, in collaboration with Metal Blade Records CEO Brian Slagel.
