About Rachel Elizabeth
Rachel Elizabeth is the artist formerly known as Fern. As her first solo project, Fern started as a musical experiment that lasted well over four years, helping Rachel develop her song-writing and performance skills under the loving safety of a moniker. The name change comes, in part, due to copyright concerns, but also to better reflect her artistic vision moving forward. As Fern, Rachel toured Saskatchewan and Alberta, opened for the likes of Rae Spoon, Jeremy Fisher and Megan Nash, as well as released her debut studio EP ‘Strange Fingerprints’ through the Sound and Silence Collective, a steadily growing independent record label (Saskatoon, SK). Recorded in the summer of 2013 with funding from SaskMusic, Strange Fingerprints was well received, garnering Rachel vocal comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Jenny Lewis. Following her EP ‘Strange Fingerprints,’ Rachel is focusing on piano based songs, a path forged by standout track 'Prairie Skies' and continued on ‘The Spendthrift and the Swallow.’ Based on the Aesop Fable of the same name, the track is a collaboration between Elizabeth and Saskatoon songwriter Jeffrey Popiel (Juniperus, Minor Matter). Featuring a slow instrumental lament of piano, mandolin and delicate strings, Rachel's vocals reinforce the moral of the story: One swallow does not a summer make. With the generous support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, Rachel is spending the Spring (2016) writing a new full length album, tentatively titled, ‘Wildflowers of the Prairies.’ Praise for Strange Fingerprints: “A dream that you’ll never want to wake up from.”-Razmataz Magazine “Fern fuses folk, indie and contemporary elements into a wholly uniquely sounding record. And central to this sound is Fern’s knack for storytelling.” –The Rooster “If they [The Sound and Silence Collective] were looking for endearing emotional folk ballads, they found the perfect addition.” -Grayowl Point If birds were to help you get dressed in the morning. Formerly Fern. Saskatoon, SK.
