About Kaylan Mackinnon
For Kaylan Mackinnon, it’s all about creating that perfect song. “I love writing lyrics that listeners can relate to or play at any given occasion that all of their friends can enjoy together.”
This 22-year-old songwriter grew up in countryside of Ontario. “My sisters and I were taught to entertain ourselves growing up since there wasn’t much around, and well that’s when music came along.”
From the young age of 13, Mackinnon began playing guitar, singing and writing her own songs. Her first major exposure came at 18, when she was nominated for the Toronto International Music Awards “Best Young Songwriter” award by a panel of judges (including Juno-nominated singer- songwriter Jully Black) for her original song Remember Me.
The following year, Mackinnon placed as one of the Top 10 musicians for the worldwide Hard Rock Rising Contest in March of 2014, where she was flown to perform at the famous Hard Rock Cafe in the heart of downtown Toronto.
At the end of summer 2015 Mackinnon was contacted by Soul Surfer director-producer Sean McNamara to use her original song Espresso Kiss in the Hallmark feature film Just in Time for Christmas starring Eloise Mumford, William Shatner and Christopher Lloyd. The song has now generated over 200,000 streams online.
“The movie Soul Surfer is one of my favourite films, so as you can imagine this opportunity was incredible for me. Having my own song placed in a film that this incredible director worked on was a dream come true.”
Currently, Mackinnon just flew back to Toronto to play at Canadian Music Week where she had the opportunity to play her original music, attend conferences and network with industry professionals.
Vancouver has become home to Mackinnon. She is now working with west coast writer-producers Winston Hauschild and Troy Samson on her upcoming record, while playing in and around the Vancouver area. Starting in June, Mackinnon’s original song Espresso Kiss will be released to radio across Canada through radio promoter Andrea Morris.
“This year has been incredibly busy but in the best way possible. I’m always co-writing with different artists, playing shows and finding ways to take myself as artist to the next best level.”
