About B. Nugetz

Brian Cox, known around the San Francisco bay area as DJ Nugz, began his career in music by making “pause button” mix tapes at the age of 10, and getting on a set of Technics 1200 turntables a few years later. While living in Boulder, CO in 2000, Nugz gained two distinct achievements. He acquired a residency at Soma in Boulder (voted as one of the top ten clubs in America by BPM and several other dance music publications), and the number one club in Colorado at the time, Vinyl (formerly 1082 Broadway in Denver). Nugz consistently played with profound success at both of these clubs until they closed, along with numerous others in the Denver/Boulder area while still at a very early point in his career. Brian moved to SF in 2004 and when he isn’t traveling to places like Korea, Argentina, Berlin, the Miami Winter Music Conference, New York, or Burning Man he can be heard performing in prominent SF nightspots such as Mighty, Ruby Skye, Mezzanine, Yoshi’s, and the legendary 1015 Folsom. He has made his mark, creating late night soirees as Footprint Recordings that are heavily entrenched in that underground sound, produced weekly events, and thrown what are regarded by true nightlife professionals as some of the best parties. During these nights and early mornings, he shares the booth with the likes of Donald Glaude, Modeselektor, BT, Richard Vission, Hybrid, Audiofly, Sander Kleinenberg, to name a few. He is able to blend drastically different beats from all sorts of genres, and create a sound and vibe that are truly his own. A risk taker who “owns it”, works in heavy, moving, melodic basslines, unexpected builds and drops, sometimes dirty sometimes bouncy, seamless transitions from the “four on the floor” beat of house to “on the one” slowed down breaks and back again. His sets usually start around 120-125 bpm and end close to 130. He likes to pitch down the hardest breaks by five or six bpm to flow with house cut around 128bpm. His heavier selections under cover of darkness revolve around House/Techno and UK Nu Skool Break Beat sounds that range from deep, melodic, sexy, to dark, dirty, nasty, funky, grindy, techy, electro. Daylight, you may find him spinning trip hop, down tempo, mid tempo and classic hip hop, along with sexy deep house and funk all over the bay area at places like bars, lounges, back yards, yachts, pools, rooftops, lofts/warehouses, Bay to Breakers, campouts, sidewalks, or Golden Gate Park.
