About The Blessing
There are 2 bands with the name The Blessing. As a result the Bristol based group have changed their name to Get The Blessing.
Get The Blessing
Get The Blessing were formed in 2000 in Bristol, UK to share (in their words) "a fascination with improvised music, a pathological distrust of chords and a passion for north-african cuisine." They band is made up of Jim Barr (bass), Clive Deamer (drums), Pete Judge (trumpet) and Jake McMurchie (saxophone); the former two are most famous as Portishead's rhythm section. They started out playing the music of Ornette Coleman but began slowly to make a noise of their own, and a turning point came in 2006 when they finally got in the studio and a new sound emerged almost overnight. Their new approach has much in common with the current crop of trailblazers, bands such as Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland. They released their debut album, All is Yes in 2008. Their website is http://www.gettheblessing.com.
The Blessing
British band fronted by vocalist and songwriter William Topley, released two albums, Prince Of The Deep Water (1991) and Locusts & Wild Honey (1998). Currently disbanded.
Bass - Kevin Hime-Knowles
Drums - Simon Hanson
Guitar - Luke Brighty
Keyboards - Mike Westergaard
Vocals - William Topley
William Topley is a deep-voiced British vocalist with heady literary influences and a taste for the bluesy sound of America's Deep South, as well as the Caribbean rhythms of Jamaican reggae. The leader of the Blessing for two early-'90s albums, Topley earned several fans in the American music industry, including MCA executive Luke Lewis. After Lewis became the president of Mercury Nashville, he signed Topley to a recording contract. Another admirer, longtime Muscle Shoals keyboard session man and producer Barry Beckett, was hired to oversee recording in Nashville for Topley's debut album Black River, released in early 1997. Mixed Blessing, which followed in 1998, exuded a passion for Southern black soul and a gritty country drawl. A year later, Topley toyed around with folk aesthetic and signature loops of Americana for Spanish Wells. The new millennium, however, proved to be Topley's time of rediscovery. Not one to totally stick with what always works, Topley continued his musical experiments, playing with reggae and Cuban sounds inside his deepest songwriting yet for Feasting with Panthers (Lost Highway) in early 2002. Sea Fever and west coast dates with Mark Knopfler followed in 2005. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
