I went into this show not thinking I was going to enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I did. Strange Days were an authentic tribute to the legendary Doors. These four guys obviously are huge fans of the band. Musically, they had it down to a science. From Ray Manzarek’s flourishing keyboards to Robbie Kreiger’s jazz infused notes to John Densmore’s anthemic drum breaks to Jim Morrison’s vocal nuisances. When I closed my eyes I heard The Doors’ music fill this 354 seat hall with all the intensity of the original group. Visually, the band delivered as well. All were dressed in spot-on recreations of The Doors’ stage apparel down to Jim Morrison’s belt, and boots. The singer even adorned the same leather pants, and white fashionable shirt Morrison would prance around in onstage in the sixties. The guitarist wore the same attire Robbie Kreiger donned including velour pants, and fringe hippie jacket. The drummer, and keyboardist wore more conservative attire as Densmore, and Manzarek did. From a performance standpoint the singer played Morrison to a “T.” All the Native American dancing, tight rope walking, microphone cord swirling, maraca shaking, and jumping you could shake a stick at. In between acting like Morrison there were signs of a charming performer who occasionally broke character with witty comments to the crowd such as, “I’m shy, and not really” after suggestive lines. The man loved playing Jim, and had fun with it. The band followed suit by focusing on their instruments as attentively as the original Doors did. Every hit song you would ever want to hear was played in their two hour set. Overall, I felt I was experiencing the closest thing to a Doors concert I would ever see in my lifetime, considering I was five years old when the original band broke up. As the strains of “When the Music’s Over” echoed through the hall, and the last notes, and final howl of the band, and singer came to a crashing end, I realized The Doors music will not be over for a long time to come.
