About Brous

Sophia Brous is a musician, vocalist and performer, curator and creative director. Based between New York and Melbourne, she collaborates with companies, festivals and artists internationally, including recent projects with The Barbican, Southbank Centre (London), Red Bull Studios New York, National Sawdust, Pioneer Works (New York), and MONA, alongside artists including David Byrne, Sean Lennon, Kimbra, Questlove, Julia Holter, Jehnny Beth, Mick Harvey, Colin Stetson, Caroline Polachek, Kirin J Callinan and the BBC Concert Orchestra. In 2016 she was artist-in-resident of Robert Wilson's The Watermill Center, New York, Red Bull Studios New York, and just named 2016/17 Artist in Resident of celebrated New York arts institution National Sawdust. Brous is Artistic Associate of the Arts Centre Melbourne where she is curator of Supersense: Festival of the Ecstatic. Recent and ongoing projects: The Barbican’s world tour production 'In Dreams: David Lynch Revisited'; her celebrated Urbantheatre Projects/Sydney Festival commission Lullaby Movement; founder/bandleader of large ensemble collective EXO-TECH (with collaborators including Kimbra, Yuka Honda, David Byrne, Questlove, Sean Lennon, Bilal, Colin Stetson and Caroline Polachek); Marina Abramovic’s Private Archaeology for the Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart; the Southbank Centre’s production of the 1971 Frank Zappa opera 200 Motels with the BBC Concert Orchestra; Mick Harvey’s ‘Intoxicated Man’ Serge Gainsbourg record releases and international tour dates. Brous is also a recognized curator and artistic director. She emerged as one of Australia’s youngest arts leaders when she was made the Program Director of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival at the age of 22 and went on to be the curator of music of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts. She is currently the Artistic Associate of the Arts Centre Melbourne where she is the creator of Supersense: Festival of the Ecstatic a major contemporary arts event exploring intersecting states of ecstatic performance. She works closely with Greenpeace International and various other NGOs and arts organisations as an advisor and consultant.
