started 90 minutes late, but WOW they put on an amazing show
Very good but WAY too short.

I drove up from Lynchburg to see the show and I am so glad I made the trip. Great venue, good crowd (except for the drunk guy standing behind me singing every lyric, off key, one line ahead of Mike...we get it dude, you know all the songs and we are impressed). Great tunes, good vibes. Can't wait to see them play again.
Hiss Golden Messenger brought a lot of widescreen shimmer for most of last night's show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. With a crack band featuring Phil Cook on keys and guitar, Ryan Gustafson (of The Dead Tongues) on guitar, banjo and mandolin, Scott Hirsch on bass, and Darren Jesse on drums, there was no difficulty replicating the textures on any of the songs they played. Things got a little more down and dirty near the end with a towering version of Southern Grammar (Josh Kaufman adding extra guitar) and an amazing encore of the Grateful Dead's Brown Eyed Women and Brother Do You Know The Road? Tift Merritt opened the show, commanding the stage with her gorgeous voice, well-crafted songs, and skillful but gutsy guitar and piano playing. She was assisted at times by Phil Cook and returned the favor during HGM's set, singing backup on most songs and sitting in on keys. It was that kind of night - generous and heartfelt. They still have more dates ahead. I'd get there if they come near you!
