About Fragment

Fragment
Fragment: A Musical Legacy Restored – Tribute to Martin Esterhuizen
Formed in 2006, Fragment was never meant to be a fleeting moment. It was built on friendship, late‑night jam sessions, and a shared belief that some songs simply deserve to be heard. The original lineup—Martin Esterhuizen, Nico Taljaard, George Engelbrecht, and Phillie Fourie—came together to bring Martin's deeply personal songwriting to life.
Through a series of creative forging sessions, they crafted the musical landscapes for a collection of songs Martin had written over the years, while also composing new material together as a band. Guided by Martin's exceptional talent as a songwriter, Fragment entered the studio with Barend Fourie to begin recording, aiming to capture the raw soul of their work.
Then tragedy struck.
The project was left unfinished when Martin was hospitalized with a rare illness that ultimately took his life. For nearly two decades, those recordings sat quietly—cherished, untouched, and waiting.
🎸 The Resurrection
Now, almost 20 years later, Martin's music is finally ready to find its audience. Spearheaded by George Engelbrecht and with the invaluable support of Nico Taljaard, Fragment has used modern AI technology to lovingly remaster the original session tapes. This is not a commercial revival. It's a labor of love, a mission to honor a friend, and a promise kept.
"These are songs from the heart. They always deserved to be heard."
📀 The Albums
Fragment’s story unfolds across two bodies of work.
The first release – the original 13 songs the band began recording in 2006 – were issued in stages:
Two singles initially
Followed by the full album on all major streaming platforms
But the second album carries a deeper, more personal weight.
It features songs Martin wrote before passing, including the final track he composed from his hospital bed. These songs tell a sweeping, emotionally raw story – one of pain, fantasy, the end of the earth, and the salvation he ultimately found. It is both a farewell and a rising.
The band is deeply proud. His voice lives on.
🎵 About the Original Recording Lineup
While most songs feature Martin's lyrics and compositions, both albums are true band efforts, with lyrical contributions also from Nico and George.
Martin Esterhuizen – acoustic guitar and vocals
Nico Taljaard – bass and vocals
George Engelbrecht – electric guitar
Phillie Fourie – drums
This is more than music. It is a long‑awaited tribute, set for release in 2025 – ensuring that Martin's voice and his songs from the heart will finally be heard, remembered, and celebrated.
Fragment. The legacy is restored. His voice lives on.
