About The Skillful Means

The Skillful Means is more than a band; it is a multidimensional
project born from two decades of artistic exploration by H.D.
Harmsen. Seamlessly weaving the raw energy of classic punk
(circa 1976–1980) with the esoteric teachings of Nichiren
Buddhism, the band challenges traditional boundaries between
entertainment and spiritual practice.
At its core, The Skillful Means reflects the Buddhist principle
of transforming suffering into enlightenment. Each song becomes
an allegorical exploration of the human condition, rooted in the
“lower life states” identified in Nichiren Buddhism, such as
hell, anger, and animality. However, the band does not position
itself as a “Buddhist band.” Instead, it operates as an
enigmatic vessel, offering audiences an experience that is
simultaneously visceral and contemplative.
