About The Great Other
The year was 2019. The Great Other blossomed to life by frontman Josh N. Wills, guitarist Zaid Johnson, bassist Nick Chavez, and drummer Emunti Herrera within the Oakland, California’s legendary music studio compound of Soundwave Studios.
Their inspiration gravitated towards the acts of Deftones, Meshuggah, Gojira, Tool, Alice in Chains, Opeth, Coheed and Cambria, and handfuls more across the musical spectrum, which has morphed them into a standout sound within the scene of East Bay hardcore, punk, and indie. They strive for each song, and each live performance to be a beautifully mind-altering, goosebump inducing, emotional rollercoaster of a journey.
Their debut demo release, “Nostalgia”, was let loose upon the world on August 8th, 2024 as the perfect unmasking of who they are, and what they are capable of. You have the bouncy seven string staccato of “Cultish”, the sonic reverberation and melancholic sways of the title track “Nostalgia”, and it ends with the eerie lyricism and dramatically heavy odd-time chugs of “Dragon Heart”. This work of art has gladly kept its listeners on the edge of their seats throughout its 30 minute duration.
Shortly after the release of “Nostalgia”, Emunti decided to exit The Great Other to pursue other musical ventures. A few months later, prog metal drummer Brayden Cone was quickly befriended by the remaining members and had taken over the position of drums, as well as the band’s music production. On February 22nd, 2025, The Great Other released the hauntingly heavy yet ambitiously groovy single “Sirens Ignored”, produced by Brayden. The track has gained quick traction throughout streaming services, and had already became a fan favorite during live performances prior to its release date.
The foursome has performed throughout all stretches of the Bay Area, and they are extremely excited to bring their unique sound to wherever is in need of an epic alternative prog metal experience.
