About Heavyweight Rockaz
Amidst the vibrant tapestry of reggae beats and dub melodies in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica, two musicians came together with a shared vision—to fuse the pulsating rhythms of drum and bass with the soulful essence of reggae music. With that, Heavyweight Rockaz emerged as a band in 2013 with drummer Wayne “UngaBarunga” Thompson and bass guitarist Jason “Welsh Bass” Welsh.
Their 2021 debut album Heavyweight Rockaz, which was also produced by the duo, combines themes of joy and resilience while showcasing their versatility and skillful talents within the musical arts. The band’s latest releases include “Self Love” and “Don’t Throw It All Away” featuring Qyor, Big Ras and the legendary Dean Fraser, which premiered on BBC 1xtra with David Rodigan, and has been in heavy rotation on listening platforms worldwide.
Heavyweight Rockaz has garnered a well-earned buzz, from 2017 performances at Rebel Salute in St. Ann Jamaica and the Roots Reggae Festival in Hanover Germany, to a collaboration with Australian artiste Nattali Rize on a joint EP titled New Era Frequency (2015) which lead to their first United States tour opening for American singer, Michael Franti. You can find their breakthrough hit single “Raggy Road” also featured on BBC 1xtra during his 2016 visit to Jamaica.
From the studio to the stage, Heavyweight Rockaz captures the sounds of today to create music for the ages. Inspired by the likes of Sly & Robbie, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Bob Marley, the band creates and performs dub-style reggae music that appeals to wide audiences, transcends boundaries and promotes unity.
