About Cul de Sac Kids
Guided by Voices / Robert Pollard cover band outta Pittsburgh, PA. Also known to cover Devo, Pavement, the Creation, Ramones, the Saints, the Thermals, Pissed Jeans, Wilco, Misfits, Joy Division, Descendents, the Jam, Mudhoney, the Replacements, MC5, Jawbreaker, and more.
Gary (wannabe Bob) and Neighbor Steve (guitar) met in 2017 after moving into the same cul de sac within 5 days of each other. Not long after, they developed a bond over mutual love of Stephen Malkmus, the Descendents, Guided by Voices, and hazies. In 2021, the veteran bassman from Zelienople (Jawea, Spirit Bear, Peak Happiness, Black Sabbath) approached Gary about doing some GBV cover songs, with himself on guitar and Gary on vocals. Gary’s big love of all things Pollard (and inability to play an instrument) made him the best choice within the cul de sac to get on the mic and sing. The Robert Pollard penned tune “Cul De Sac Kids” from 2020’s Surrender Your Poppy Field became an easy choice as the band name.
Amplified to rock, but feeling the need to rock even harder, Steve enlisted good pal Barry Mayer (Big Green Tanks, The Preservers, Butternuts Fred) to play drums. A two hour round trip to Grove City for a used Tama kit ensued, followed by careful relocation of numerous record bins in Gary’s record room, and a new prac pad was formed. Since then, they’ve been on a pace of learning about 30 Pollard songs a year. With the goal of learning every single song Bob has ever written, Gary estimates they will achieve this goal by the year 2122, if Bob doesn’t write any more songs (unlikely).
In the summer of 2022, the producers of Like-a-Bastard Drive-In approached CdSK about becoming the first band to ever play their prestigious and annual LaBoween film fest in October. With their world premiere booked, it was time to add some bass. The short lived 3-piece promptly swooped in and plucked Barry’s brother Perry (The Pack Mules, Big Green Tanks, Death & Robots, Erect Your Idols) out of his cul de sac in Seattle, and he was immediately given the task of learning 30 songs in the next month.
In desperate need for help with sound and backup vocals, Gary brought in good pal Tirpak (Renegade Button Pusher) to help with live sound mixing and recording. Tirpak’s previous experience with a local sportsball team, ability to have a good time, and inability to play an instrument (other than kazoo) made him the perfect choice for this role. And thus the current Cul de Sac Kids crew was born.
CdSK is best known for their unflinching and high energy garage shows, in which they are known to recruit other musicians and Pollard super fans to join them on various tunes, and will play as many songs as time parameters permit (or as many as the band allows Gary to put in the set list). They also throw the best parties.
“Cul de Sac Kids are hands down the greatest GBV cover band north of the Ohio River and south of Maple Lane”, says the Sewickley Tribune.
