About Martha Groves Perry

Martha Groves Perry
Martha Groves Perry
Martha Groves Perry is an unusual original indie rocker who combines evocative, visceral songwriting with a voice like salty potato chips and dark chocolate to crystallize often unexpressed core emotions and insights. Her bold Alternative Rock has a provocative clarity with flavors of Americana and blues, and her penetrating lyrics reflect the fearless truth-telling and unbothered amusement of a seasoned, female point of view.

Having begun her recording career as a cello soloist on classical, rock, and folk releases, Martha toured with Michelle Shocked on cello and backing vocals in 2011. This experience spurred her to write her own music, and she released her first solo EP in 2016. Subsequent albums released in 2020 and 2023, when she completed a 6-city US tour including a debut in Nashville at The Bowery Vault, where she shared a bill with Greg Camp of SmashMouth.

Martha’s unique voice both as a songwriter and a vocalist captivated legendary guitarist and producer Pat Thrall (Pat Travers Band, Hughes/Thrall, Meatloaf, Asia, etc + 4 Grammy nominations), and they partnered in 2025 to co-write, produce, and release her originals. The first – BE RIGHT BACK – released in January 2026. The next single releases on September 23, 2026. Three additional songs are recorded with two more in the works. Clarence Collins (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Little Anthony and the Imperials) also collaborated on vocal arrangements for two of the songs.

Some characterize Martha’s music as a cross between Tom Waits, early Gwen Stefani, and the Indigo Girls, and her distinctive vocal style has been placed alongside those of Natalie Merchant, Stevie Nicks, Ricki Lee Jones, and Patti Smith. Martha captivates audiences with a magnetic stage presence alongside committed, engaging performances of her meaningful and substantive songs. Martha performs both solo and with her 4-piece band, The Martha Groves Perry Band.

As a vocalist and cellist, she toured with Michelle Shocked, and has also performed with Tony Lindsay, Skip Edwards, James Nash, Jesse Brewster, Rich Armstrong, Crystal Monee Hall, Uriah Duffy, and Greg Tanner Harris.

PRESS

"BE RIGHT BACK marks the beginning of Martha Groves Perry ’s collaboration with Pat Thrall and Clarence Collins. The resulting sound reveals something sublime, classic, timeless, and moving. The single confidently settles at the intersection of classic rock, pop rock, and alternative rock, evoking the tradition of melodic heaviness from names like Sheryl Crow or Bonnie Raitt, but without becoming a nostalgic replica. Martha's voice is the central element of the song. There's soul, personality, and a certain implicit smile in her interpretation. Ultimately, the sonic elements converge to create a flawless arrangement."
~ MJ BARRETO, MUSIC FOR ALL, BRAZIL

"Her tone, intonation, phrasings & how she applies her inimitable style is like salty potato chips & dark chocolate."
~ JOHN APICE, AMERICANA HIGHWAYS

"You might be reminded of Tom Waits, Tom Petty or Natalie Merchant …"
~ TOM HAUGEN, TAKE EFFECT REVIEWS

"Perry’s music is sinewy, relying on powerful hooks and her welcoming voice to drive her message home."
~ RACHEL CHOLST, ADOBE & TEARDROPS
