About The Canny Band
Songlines **** - “Exciting and invigorating”
RnR **** “Simply stunning”
"Once in a while you hear something that just stops you in your tracks. The Canny Band had that effect on me. Just Sensational." (Bruce MacGregor, BBC Radio Scotland Travelling Folk)
“Great players with standout arrangements.” (Kathryn Tickell, BBC Radio 3 Music Planet)
The Canny Band are Sam Mabbett, Michael Biggins (BBC Young Traditional Musician of the
Year 2021) and Callum Convoy, A rare fusion of piano, diatonic button accordion and
bodhran.
In 2021 the band were recipients of the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music ‘Up and coming’ award which led to a busy summer touring festivals around Scotland and England. prior to this, the band already have several awards under their belt including a Trip to
Birmingham festival Molloy Award, a Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award and Hands up for
Trad’s Battle of the Folk Bands.
Fellow stalwarts of Glasgow’s fertile music scene, the already-seasoned trio cook up an expert, effervescent mix of trad-based material with borrowings from classical, jazz and beyond. Rising stars of the traditional music scene, The Canny Band are not to be missed!
