About Mystic Park
Bendigo-based singer-songwriter Shann Lions has carved out a 25-year career in the independent music scene.
Lions grew up in a tiny town in central Victoria. Expelled from high school, and later a university dropout, an 18-year-old Lions picked up a guitar between shifts on a tomato farm and set about learning a chord a day.
Six months later, Lions and his guitar moved to Bendigo; he put an advertisement in the window of the local music shop, then formed indie power-pop four-piece Ruteger.
Two albums, three EPs, national touring with major support slots (for Wolfmother, You Am I, The Living End, The Church), nationwide radio play and press, and major label interest followed. On the brink of a breakthrough, but with inter-band tensions on the rise, Ruteger imploded in 2005.
Lions released a self-titled solo album in 2006. It was followed by the EP Beautiful Mistake, before he took an eight-year hiatus from music.
Lions re-emerged in late 2014 with roots rockers Four Lions, conceived as a solo studio project but soon to become a fully fledged band.
Four Lions have released five albums - including 2019's Hard Days, the Herald Sun's Album of the Week, a first for an independent, regionally based band - have toured extensively through Victoria and interstate, and attracted national radio play.
The band’s latest album, Wide Awake, was released on their label Verse Chorus Verse and distributed nationally through MGM. Chief songwriter Lions received a highly commended in an international songwriting competition for the second single Feels So Right.
Lions played a 2018 regional Victorian songwriters’ showcase alongside Fraser A. Gorman and Freya Josephine Hollick.
Lions will release Silver Lining, the debut for his new project Mystic Park, in 2023. And work is already under way on songs for a sixth Four Lions album.
