About Joey Gutos
Joey Gutos is a genre-bending Indie Pop artist from the blazing heart of Tempe, Arizona. His soulful voice simmers atop funk-inspired grooves and irresistible guitar hooks to create a sound that radiates with the same vibrant energy of his hometown’s city streets. Some of his modern influences include Mac Demarco, Glass Animals and Dominic Fike, while his deepest musical roots are grounded in the works of Motown’s greatest, 60’s Psychedelia and classic Blues/Folk artists who fertilized the landscape of Rock N’ Roll.
Joey began his journey as a solo artist in the summer of 2019 as his prior project Sunset Voodoo was put on an indefinite hiatus. He felt a calling to express something more uniquely personal to himself and released his debut single "Everything (That I Need)" on Arbor Day of 2020. The song pays homage to his home state of Arizona and was featured in a mini documentary of the Arizona Trail called “Adventure Lives At Home.” Upon its release, he vowed to plant a tree for every 1K streams the song receives to honor and promote the source of the song’s inspiration: Mother Earth.
Joey’s second single, “Bad News,” takes on a slightly more poignant attitude, whose lyrics express feelings of angst and futility, while juxtaposed with bright and bouncy music. It was a song born out of the chaos of 2020 and was his way of dealing with its barrage of bad news with a smile.
His newest single “Givin In” is his most polished release to date, characterized by its crispy vocals, simmering guitars and dusty “lo-fi” percussion. The song features close friend and co-writer Cori Rios, another Phoenix native who’s southwest edge helps to give the record its desert road trip vibe. This is the third single of a 5 track EP, whose remaining songs will be released successively into the new year.
Joey has performed at notable Arizona venues including Crescent Ballroom, Valley Bar and Rebel Lounge, as well as the main stage for the 2022 Ostrich Festival, for which he opened up for The Beach Boys as part of their Sounds Of Summer Tour.
Joey’s ability to write, produce, perform and organize have made him an invaluable asset to Arizona’s music culture as he builds momentum to leave his mark on the landscape of modern music.
