About Non Residents
The principle applies to NYC-based metal outfit Non Residents, who formed on New Year's Eve in 2019. The band—led by Chilean-born brothers Amaru and Roberto Fenoutt on vocals and drums, respectively—uses their music as an incendiary call to action, as heard on their debut album, Against Police Brutality. As musically diverse as it is energized, the album is a necessary response to current times.
The Fenoutt brothers began their musical journey in 2005 and immigrated to New York City in 2015. As they overcame the obstacles that come with being undocumented immigrants in the United States, the brothers formed Non Residents and began to play regionally, clocking 26 shows in their first year as a band. Though 2020 brought new challenges, Non Residents persevered and released their debut album in 2021.
Combining the ferocity of Pantera and Sepultura with Andean rock and Mapuche rhythms, Non Residents make their mark in the vein of System of a Down, Bob Dylan and fellow Chileans Los Prisioneros. Against Police Brutality is simply an opening. The NYC thrashers have wrapped an EP ready for fall release and will hit the road this September. Counter culture beckons and soon, the world will sing songs of resistance and freedom alongside Non Residents.
