About Gregg Hill Music
Artist and musician Gregg Hill rides his Zen Appalchian groove like a record needle always moving towards the encroaching and spinning horizon. Here is a critical consciousness scripting the song of his life with a voice often from another age. A spiritual man has hit the road only to find the walls and the rubble of the past paving his way through uncertainty and enlightenment.
Hill hails from Chicago, New Jersey, Dallas, D.C., NY and currently resides in New Orleans. He is not easily defined. His has been a journey of aimlessness, joy, immense sorrow, gratitude, depression, lost time… Should we all be so fortunate? That kind of pain, loss and resurrection comes through every song. If you can conceive of a guitar as a lens, then know that Hill was, and is always, seeing the world through chord progression and lyrical intent. Polishing and whittling his voice, confronting delusion with the pen knife of karma.
Gregg Hill’s music draws one in like an irreverent guided meditation. It requires real listening. He is a conjurer, a snake oil salesman with language and sound harkening to times past and reckonings to come. Hill digs into the ethos of Americana with a guitar that is made for archeology. He excavates relationships, duality, nature, and ancestry with an unfulfilled craving for understanding.
Songs like When You Die You’re Dead and Sky of Gold offer up plain spoken storytelling with melodies that bloom on a zen slap of recognition and revelation. The origins of Gregg Hill's music are country, rock and roll, roots, and folk--the genres of the immigrants. These are the songs written after the day's work has been done. Visionary, responsible, and mature.
In very recent years Hill has been shedding his vision with accomplished musicians, performers, teachers, charlatans, producers, and poets in both New Orleans and Nashville. The new record, Born Liar was produced at The Doghouse Studio in Nashville by 5X Grammy Award-winning producer Neal Cappellino. Along with a stellar backing band, it features renowned artists Shane Theriot, Kenny Vaughan, Ron Block, Jeff Coffin, and Anders Osborne. Born Liar was released January 2022 and went to #95 on the AMA chart, #14 on the alt-Country chart and #4 for two months on the Relix/Jambands chart. His next record, Bayou St. John comes out Spring 2023.
