About Off The Pier
Off The Pier is a modern jazz trio composed of Andrew Cheng on guitar, Marcelo Maccagnan on bass and Maxime
Cholley on drums. Created towards the end of 2020, the three band members graduated from the notorious Berklee
College of Music and are respectively enjoying a fruitful musical career. Although now all based in New York City, they
come from different corners of the world, namely Malaysia, Brazil and France; and each represent different cultures and
influences.
Born from the desire to support their families and people in lockdown; as well as the longing to play live music again,
the trio performed online concerts extensively during the beginning of 2021. This allowed Off The Pier to build a strong
chemistry and imagine uniquely creative paths for their music. One particular artistic route took the form of fully
improvised songs, in the moment, with no prior instructions, as a way to distil their inner emotions and feelings with no
dialogue but the one that is music. Off The Pier’s sound therefore is both accessible and complex, meaningful and openended,
creating acoustic testaments of the “here-and-now”. While pooling from their vast musical knowledge of genres,
the trio is striving to create a sound that is their own, flexible but bold, and always looking forward to getting inspired
from new horizons.
