About Jerry, at the Beach
Jerry, at the Beach is an American indie rock band founded in 2018 in Southampton, New Jersey. Centered around the duo of Josh Russell and Ethan Flynn, the band’s characteristically eclectic sound blends indie rock, pop rock, punk, and folk music with noise, sound collage, and hardcore music.
Russell and Flynn grew up on the same street in Southampton, New Jersey, but did not meet until high school. After years of playing music together and exploring influences, the duo became Jerry, at the Beach, and over the course of two years, wrote, recorded, and mixed their debut album, often within the confines of a small camper located in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey.
Jerry, at the Beach incorporates influences from many different artists and styles from many different eras, including The Beatles, Oasis, Elliott Smith, Death Cab for Cutie, The Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, The White Stripes, early country blues and folk records, King Krule, Green Day, Swans, Coldplay, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Modest Mouse, Green Day, Sufjan Stevens, and The Band.
Their music frequently switches style, sound, and instrumentation, often within the confines of a single song, culminating in a highly idiosyncratic sound. Their subject matter frequently covers topics such as nostalgia, various locations throughout New Jersey, alcoholism, depression, suicide, and youth-driven frustration.
