About Beehive Quartet

Beehive Quartet is a true band of friends. The 4-piece collective began in January 2019 while we were all students at the Manhattan School of Music based on 3 guiding principles: love, freedom, and jokes.

What began as a shared list of albums evolved into a powerful group sound shaped by the music we all love. Drawing inspiration from masterpieces of the ‘60s such as Max Roach’s We Insist, Miles Davis’s Live at the Plugged Nickel, and Charles Mingus’s Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, we love this music so dearly and believe their feeling and messages are profoundly relevant as we enter into the 2020’s a more divided nation than ever before. The 1960’s in jazz was a decade of protest to be sure, but this music is also filled with deep love and camaraderie. From Miles’s 2nd Quintet to Ornette’s Double Quartet, these bands pushed boundaries and took no prisoners but did so through unity! We cherish all opportunities to play together and respect the music through dedication, continual rehearsal, and sincerity. There are no PDFs or paper music in Beehive Quartet, we teach each other our songs and take them to heart.

Freedom, in music and otherwise, stems from love first. Countless late night listening hangs, food runs, and hours of playing mean that there are no wrong notes on our bandstand. When you love people for their strengths and faults together, they can make no mistakes. Changing tempos becomes a game, dissonances are the soul, and missed notes just make us laugh. When we’re exploring and improvising together, we’re having a good time.

Our upcoming debut album, Pollen Covered Fantasy, embraces love, freedom, and jokes. Compositions from all four members are represented, each of them having their own personality and tone. The unique pieces range from the ethereal title track to the hard-hitting and clashing “Tug of War”. The comfort and fluidity with which the bassist, Tony Golden and the drummer, Quinton Cain, interact with each other is showcased in Quinton’s frenetic “Beowulf”, and their dynamism and collaborative energy remains present throughout the rest of the album. Austin Zhang and Joseph Giordano, the alto saxophonist and trombonist respectively, display their improvisational prowess and impressive ears on “Wasted”, a groove-heavy piece by Tony Golden. In Austin’s “Simon Says”, the truly playful and symbiotic nature of the band as a whole is on display, as the piece shifts effortlessly between sections on the whim of one person or another. In its entirety, Pollen Covered Fantasy is a dynamic and promising debut album, indicative of a band in which listening, love, and friendship take precedence.
