About Daphne Roubini

Daphne Roubini is a vocalist with dreams. A Vancouver Jazz Festival spotlight artist 2019, performing with her band Black Gardenia: a different kind of vintage jazz band re-interpreting jazz, folk, and blues classics and vintage inspired originals.

Highlighted artist on the main stage of The Vancouver Folk Festival 2019 with Ruby & Smith: Jazz/folk ukulele duo and ‘Vancouver’s first lady and duke of uke’.

And dreamer of inspiring the joy of music in others to heal and elevate their lives, expressed in Ruby’s Ukes Ukulele School, a grass roots music project that is now the largest Ukulele school is the world outside of Hawaii.

Her dream to express herself as a performer, change maker and music activist making a difference in the world through music is now becoming very real.

“Evocative vocalist Daphne Roubini sounds at once retro – think Billie Holiday and Madeleine Peyroux – and yet cheekily modern and on trend.”
Georgia Mancio, Artistic Director and founder,
ReVoice! Festival, London, UK.

Black Gardenia~
“Daphne Roubini's original tunes bring to mind Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy Jazz with Billie Holiday as vocalist.” Vancouver Sun

"Transporting listeners back to a time of martinis, lounge suits, and hazy cigarette smoke... the fact that Roubini's originals are indistinguishable among the stacked line-up is the biggest compliment of all" Georgia Straight

“Here we find what it would have sounded like if prime Billie Holiday hooked up with the Hot Club for a one off that wound up setting the sky on fire. An utterly smoking journey through a past that never was, this is how you polish a stone into a gem. Killer stuff throughout.” Midwest Record

“This Jazz/country/folk/blues band filter everything they do through their own special musical time capsule.” North Shore News

"The musical equivalent of taking a bath in a barrel of finely aged bourbon.” Robert Collins CTV BC

Ruby & Smith~
“Instantly captivating, Ruby & Smith ooze charm with their stripped down approach to jazz/folk balladeering."
Robert Collins, Music Correspondent, CTV BC.

“Some of the hippest Ukulele that you can hope to hear.”
Ken Pickering, Artistic Director and Co-Founder, TD Canada Trust International Jazz Festival

“Daphne Roubini’s voice flows over you like golden syrup; a perfect balance between Louisiana Jazz and a hazy Maui afternoon.”
Fleur Cooper, CITR radio

‘Ruby (Daphne Roubini) has a rich velvety jazz vocal with a smoky, sensuous and sometimes playful touch’
Jonathan Aird
