Shyam Nepali Sarangi

Originally from Kathmandu, Nepal, Shyam is a citizen of the world. His dazzling musicianship and effortless improvisation has taken the national folk instrument of Nepal, a four string fiddle made of wood, strings, and goatskin, and has turned it into an instrument capable of expressing every emotion known and unknown, able to blend with any style from jazz, folk, classical, to heavy metal.

Shyam comes from a legendary musical family. Shyam's father Ram Sharan Nepali, and grandfather, Magar Gaine, were the country's most prominent sarangi players of their generation. Shyam's son, Prince Nepali, continues his legacy in Nepal. Shyam has enjoyed a long career traveling the world with his sarangi as a musical ambassador, and has worked with artists such as Patti Smith, Ani Choying Drolma, in addition to his own project such as Sukarma, Rudhra. Shyam founded the Himalayan Heritage Cultural Academy in Boston, MA, which offers classes and lessons in Nepali music and dance. Shyam currently resides in the USA.
