About head apart
Emerging from the Los Angeles music scene, Head Apart quickly developed into their moody style of post-rock. However, the music itself almost never came to be, as Albert Martinez describes, “Some days were harder than others. Some [days] I couldn’t even pick up the guitar. Other days, finishing a verse, a chorus, those were the victories.” The singer/guitarist often weaves his own battles with depression and anxiety into Head Apart’s music (hence the band’s name). Martinez recalls often having panic attacks before recording, and experienced bouts of insomnia and depression in between the writing and recording process.
Co-Produced by Nic Capelle (The Florida Mistakes, Bad Man Dance), Head Apart’s debut album Heaven On My Mind Hell In The Heart has been described as a sonic blend of moody and intense sounds reminiscent of the 90s grunge era. Throughout the album’s narrative, Martinez pens a lyrical duality touching on subjects such as mental health and substance abuse that find themselves at a conflicting forefront with faith and religion, compelling listeners to reflect on the dissonance of both in the same way. "Where there is judgment and condemnation [lyrically] on this record," said Martinez. "There's also confession and pleas for forgiveness." As the album title suggests, Heaven On My Mind Hell In The Heart is simultaneously oppressive and soothing; it both whispers and shouts.
