So we had the good fortune to have quite an intimate space where the warmth and resonance of their unusual instruments could be felt as well as heard. Can a 'violin' sound like a bagpipes? Yes it can. Can a 'violin' sound like a flute? Absolutely. The music was exploration of simple themes through dynamics, syncopation' 'space' and dis/harmonies. Definitely going on my Spotify playlists.

About Northern Resonance

Northern Resonance is the Scandinavian string trio that takes newly composed folk music into enormous soundscapes. With their previously untested combination of instruments; viola d’amore, hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpa they let Scandinavian music such as polskas, waltzes and marches meet explosive rhythms and grand chamber-like arrangements that takes folk music in a new direction.

All members are highly skilled and accomplished musicians, rooted in traditional music. With an intense musical connection that is rare to come across, they invite you into their world of compositions. There is great life in their tunes, and the trio knows how to bring it out. With their debut album that was released in the autumn of 2020, Northern Resonance have already established themselves with a glorious sound. The album was nominated for a Swedish Grammy.

“With their close interplay, the trio moves effortlessly outside the soundscape of the tradition but moves just as easily within it. The instrument’s many resonance strings become the trio's musical bloodstream that is effervescent with both detail and boundlessness. It pulsates with the feeling of home as well as a desire to discover new land.” — Lira Music Magazine

Northern Resonance had an official showcase at WOMEX 21 in Porto, Portugal and have been selected for an official showcase at Folk Alliance International 2023 in Kansas City. The trio are currently writing new material for their second album which will be recorded during the upcoming year.

“It’s amazing to be in the resonating soundscape that is created through Northern Resonance. The sound is grand and sonorous, and the core is heartfelt and comes from the joy of creating and playing music together. This is what we want to communicate to our audience regardless if it’s on the dancefloor, in the big venues, at festivals or at the small and intimate concerts. “ - Anna, Petrus & Jerker (Northern Resonance)
