Sometimes there are artists who cross all kinds of borders naturally, like for instance the ones between countries, musical tastes and generation gaps. Max Meser is one of those. He has two nationalities: Spanish and Dutch. But essentially he sees himself as a European. "When you've listened to The Beatles from an early age onwards, you automatically look across borders," he says. No flaw in that argument.

In terms of taste Meser fits equally well with young geezers from today’s pop scene like Miles Kane and Jake Bugg, but just as much with blasts from the past like sixties pop icons such as The Kinks and The Who. There is something in his guitar playing that touches upon fifties rock 'n' roll, that very same crystal clear jingly jangly guitar sound that made nineties indie pop band The La's from Liverpool so irresistible. With him the times and influences inadvertently roll in to one.

The boy grew up, constantly adapting himself to many challenges. Meser (22) hails from the Costa Brava in Spain. There he played with musicians from all over Europe, as a busker out on the streets and in the pub. When Jan van Dorsten, the owner of the renowned record store Record Palace opposite to the Paradiso club in Amsterdam, invited him for an in-store on Record Store Day in 2012, he decided to buy a one-way ticket to Amsterdam. In his eyes, the Netherlands, his father's birthplace, is the Promised Land to launch a career in pop. ‘Spain is simply not a suitable country to start a band,’ he explains. In the Netherlands Meser grabs every opportunity to realize his dream. He does both solo acoustic shows - such as supporting local stars Tangerine - but also gigs with his own band.

Here you see a young adventurer, who dares to try his luck somewhere else. At the same time he eagerly accepts all help of seasoned musicians from the sixties or from his contemporaries. For his debut album, he has cooperated with the much in demand producer Matthijs van Duijvenbode (of Tim Knol and Douwe Bob-fame). A release date is set for 2015.

Soms lopen er van die artiesten rond die als het ware vanzelf landsgrenzen, muzieksmaken en generatiekloven overschrijden. Max Meser is er zo eentje. Hij heeft twee nationaliteiten: de Spaanse en de Nederlandse. Maar in essentie beschouwt hij zichzelf als een Europeaan. ‘Als je van jongs af aan naar The Beatles hebt geluisterd, dan kijk je automatisch over de grenzen heen,’ zegt hij. Geen speld tussen te krijgen.

Smaaktechnisch past hij even goed bij jonge gasten uit het hier en nu zoals Miles Kane en Jake Bugg als bij de sixtiespop van bijvoorbeeld The Kinks en The Who. Er zit iets in zijn gitaarspel dat dan weer aanpikt bij fifties rock ‘n’ roll, datzelfde kristalheldere jingly jangly gitaargeluid dat popband The La’s uit Liverpool in de jaren negentig zo onweerstaanbaar maakte. Bij hem vliegen de tijden en de invloeden onwillekeurig ineen.

Zijn aanpassingsvermogen is hem met de paplepel ingegoten. Meser (22) groeit op aan de Costa Brava. Daar speelt hij samen met muzikanten vanuit heel Europa. Op straat en in de kroeg. Als Jan van Dorsten, eigenaar van de fameuze platenzaak Record Palace tegenover Paradiso in Amsterdam, hem in 2012 uitnodigt voor een in-store op Record Store Day, besluit hij een enkeltje Amsterdam te kopen. In zijn ogen is Nederland, zijn vaders bakermat, het beloofde land om een popcarrière van de grond te krijgen. ‘Spanje is gewoon niet zo’n geschikt land om een band op te richten,’ legt hij uit. In Nederland pakt Meser elke kans aan om zijn droom waar te maken. Hij doet zowel akoestische solo shows - zoals in het voorprogramma van Tangarine - maar ook met zijn eigen band.

Hier zie je een jonge avonturier, die het aandurft om elders zijn geluk te beproeven. Tegelijk pakt hij gretig alle hulp aan van gelouterde muzikanten, uit de jaren zestig of van heel recentelijk nog maar. Voor zijn debuutalbum gaat hij bijvoorbeeld samenwerken met de veelgevraagde producer Matthijs van Duijvenbode (o.a. Tim Knol en Douwe Bob). Dat album zit nu in de pipeline en komt volgend jaar pas uit.
