Clementine Was Right

Clementine Was Right is the songwriting project of poets Mike Young and Gion Davis. Chronicling years of uprooting—from Northern California to New England, Alaska to New Mexico—the music gallops and sways through lyric-driven, hook-smeared bootgaze and western emo, complicating and queering the lineage of "country music" with yokel fuzz.


After releasing three books of poems and stories in the early 2010s, Mike started Clementine Was Right in 2018. The band is based in Denver and features an orchard of collaborators in Arkansas, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Memphis.

In 2023, the band is putting together their most ambitious songs yet, recording between Denver and Memphis Magnetic. These new songs are about friends burning down and olive trees leaving town.
