About Ex-Isles

Ex-Isles is a brand new band made up of Pete Devlin and James Joys. Their forthcoming first album Luxury Mass, written and recorded in Ireland during the last turbulent eighteen months, is a dark, glowering collection of songs that will envelop and trouble the listener.

A deep-seated and timely anger simmers through the lush verdant beauty of their songs, held aloft by a vivid baritone voice that bears the ghosts of David Sylvian and Scott Walker. These are songs that mourn for the better futures that have been gambled away, and for cities that have been lost to speculators, but which find beauty and promise in the tragic figure of the exile.

On record their songs are expansive and sonorous, informed by equally by James Joys’s unsettling productions and arrangements and Pete Devlin’s luscious vocal harmonisations, but also work strikingly in a live setting as intimate chamber pieces for piano and voice.
