About The Dusty Ramblers Project
“I’ll be Ms. Lindy and you will be the Dusty Rambler’s”. That’s how it all started somewhere around 2013. Lindy Hamilton, an 8 year old country/bluegrass singer was sitting in with longtime friends and guitar players Mark McDowell and Ted Brown at a gig they were playing.
Free range, organic music was the general rule, and now the moniker of The Dusty Rambler’s Project. Thursday night jams is where it all began, as free range and organic as you can get. Started by two middle-aged guys with a passion for good music and guitars, the rotating door of great musicians and singers brought in by McDowell narrowed down. What emerged were some creative and fun originals with a perfect blend of blues, bluegrass, swing and rock covers with Mark and Ted in the lead and a core of backing musicians. The Dusty Rambler’s write songs about some of the most fun and obvious things in life… tie dye shirts, old cars, dressing up, and life experiences.
Before the Dusty Ramblers project there was just Mark and Ted. Coming from different lifestyle backgrounds and band history and crossing paths over the years, they finally started jamming together in May of 2013 and became good friends with mutual music interests. It didn’t take long till both started crafting original songs about love, cars, and their ramblings. As the Thursday night organic jams evolved, Mark and Ted’s originals began to shine. The core of the players narrowed down to make The Dusty Rambler’s project, now a solid 5 piece band with rich and diverse musical histories.
Singer songwriter, guitarist Mark McDowell has been playing guitar since age ten and writing songs since 1979. Also a local, accredited artist he has been busy in many aspects of art and music throughout the valley for 35 years.
Singer songwriter, guitarist Ted Brown has been playing guitar and writing songs since 1977. Ted still plays his same guitar from 1967 and has crafted some of his best songs on that very guitar.
Bass player Rod Dickinson has been playing bass, guitar and pedal steel since 1975. A music educator and an experienced performer Rod’s vast experience was crucial to helping get the core of Dusty Rambler’s focused and not to be quite so “organic”.
Violin, bass and fiddle player Max Rowles has been playing those and many other instruments since childhood. An educated musician like Rod, Max’s knowledge and experience brings some of the most tasty licks and riffs to the songs.
Drums and percussion player Gary Smith has been playing drums around the Tempe, Phoenix area for 25 years with some of the valleys veteran bands. The Pistoleros, Los Guys and many more.
This unique mix of material and musicians has even The Dusty Rambler’s excited to play their material out and about. On the scene since 2016, gigs and momentum continue for the Dusty Rambler’s into 2017. An album of their unique mix of songs about life, paisley covered materialistic items and a cast of characters is in the works and should be out in late 2017 or the early part of 2018. Check them out on Facebook for show dates and other news... and keep an eye out for The Dusty Rambler’s Project.
The Ramblers look forward to the bigger stage where they can add some musical family and friends to roam free range… shaking it up.
