Red Light Stereo, a dynamic four piece pop-rock outfit, formed in 2009 and immediately hit the ground running with an infectious sound and a determined drive to be heard. The Durban band has grown from strength to strength in the short time that they have been together and their fresh sound, supplemented with inspirational lyrics, catchy hooks and anthemic melodies, has given rise to exciting opportunities for the group, including extensive radio play, TV stints and impressive live performances on stage with most of South Africa’s leading artists. The band consists of front man Dylan Rhodes (vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboard), Gareth Purchase (lead guitar, vocals, keyboard), Lliam Scholtz (bass & vocals) and Don Blom (drums). Their debut single Daydreaming achieved early success for the band in late 2009 by being playlisted on East Coast Radio, Red Cap Radio, various SA Campus Stations, MTV Base and DSTV’s music bouquets. They released their debut EP entitled Edges of a Dream in 2010, which consisted of six of the band’s original tracks and includes the popular singles Daydreaming, Nothing on your Own and Red Light (which were also playlisted on various radio stations nationally). The music video for Daydreaming exploded onto DSTV’s MK, showing off the group’s charismatic appeal and creative spark. With influences such as Coldplay, One Republic, The Script and The Naked and Famous, Red Light Stereo has recently recorded four singles to be released in mid 2012 via internet download. The songs have a distinctive pop rock feel, with certain elements of hip hop and dance being used to create a more contemporary and edgy sound. The group teamed up with multi-award winning producer Brian O’Shea, to develop their sound and shape the songs into something powerful and effective. The songwriting is clever, subtle and meaningful and the boys from Red Light Stereo are upbeat about the prospects going forward. So the verdict is out, Red Light Stereo is guilty of taking the music scene hostage. They are pushing the boundaries and the only ransom they are demanding is that you have yourself an awesome time with them!
