Lonnie Holley

I went because I've been inspired by his assemblage artworks for years. Lonnie Holley is a unique artist and I wanted to hear his music. He was accompanied by the opening band, Mourning a BlkStar out of Cleveland, who delivered thumping soulful artrock. Lonnie looked a lot older than when I saw him at MassMoCA years ago. His hair was a fright but his gritty voice was strong. His concerts are all improvisation so don't expect greatest hits. The band followed him when Lonnie was leading and led him when he was fading. His words and stories are direct and straight from his loving heart. A true original on the order of Sun Ra or John Fahey. Go see him.

So many things to say I don’t know where to start. The Lab, Lonnie Holley, Sonfoot... such a moving night. So grateful.

Lonnie and band members were totally connected. Lonnie was responding to the church setting with a cemetery outside. it felt important magical mystical and surreal.
