About Michelle Young and The Collection
Michelle Young and the Collection is a Los Angeles-based band that was formed in 2017. The group is led by lead singer Michelle Young (founder of The Box Presents and ROVE). The soulful alt-rock band draws inspiration from a number of genres including soul, Americana, blues, jazz, rock, neo-soul and funk music. The band uses both traditional songs and spoken word pieces set to music throughout their live sets, and will begin to release singles in 2019.
The band's live shows are more of an experience than a typical show--of the shows, Michelle says, "Our desire is that audiences walk away with the knowledge that they are not alone, and it's okay to be human. We live in a crazy world and we're all trying to work through our humanity. We want to work through it together."
Michelle's poetry has been published in Local Wolves magazine and past performances as a solo artist included shows with Hotel Cafe, The Spare Room and Silverlake Sessions.
High Voltage Magazine presented Michelle Young and the Collection's Official Debut at The Satellite (Foo Fighters, Beck, Foster the People, Lady Gaga, Local Natives, etc.) in April 2018; they opened for buzzy L.A.-based bands The Colour Coast and Night Talks. In July 2018, the band played the Moroccan Lounge as a charity show for The Trevor Project alongside Wolf Bay, Emma Cole, VAVÁ and Georgi Kay. In August 2018, the band played their first festival: Echo Park Rising. In Fall 2018, they played 7 secret shows with Sofar Sounds: Los Angeles, including a special show at The GRAMMY Museum. They rounded 2018 out with a holiday show at The Hotel Cafe for ROVE and Baltisoul Magazine, sharing the stage with LA favorites: MAWD, New Dialogue, Velvet Starlings, Mads Paige and GMNII.
Their live sets have featured special appearances by Effie Passero (American Idol Top 24, 2018), Dave Yaden (4x Grammy Winner), Malynda Hale, James Byous, Puscie Jones (The Puscie Jones Revue) and more.
In April 2018, Michelle also performed as a featured artist at Sessions58 at Looking Glass Cocktail Club in London, England. Sessions58 is a weekly music showcase run by Ilana Lorraine (formerly Sony/UK) and Nate James (MOBO nominee).
In 2019, the band is continuing to play shows while also writing and recording their first EP. Keep an eye on the band's Instagram Stories for secret show announcements.
"One of my favorite quotes is something Nina Simone once said, 'An artist's duty is to reflect the times.' I believe an artist's duty is to not only reflect the times, but to enhance them. I write music and poetry I hope other people will enjoy, but mostly I write music and poetry that means something to me." -Michelle Young
