The DJ booth—normally reserved as a platform for ego—is wont to become a lonely place. In an industry that sees more than its fair share of posturing and drive, setting the stage for something as simple as love can be an act of artistry itself.
And for Isis Kuaygarond and Mathew Jonson, AKA Mr. & Mrs. Jonson, getting up on stage together is nothing if not a celebration of this most luminous of feelings. Love for music, love for each other, and a shared love for running hand in hand from the banalities of real life.
"I hope my lady and I are still making music when we get older"—an unabashed confession, at once intimate and refreshing, endears us to the cause.
These days, that cause takes the shape of electro-heavy sessions, complete with trademark Jonson synth work and Isis' soulful, R&B-inflected vocals. All the classic sounds Roland has ever deemed to create have a place in the duo's meanderings, though who knows what dreams may come?
The path has so far led them to a debut at cult festival Houghton in 2017, a surreal live performance for BE-AT.TV atop Berlin's famed Teufelsberg mountain and an upcoming release on Shaddock Records in March 2018. And this is indeed shaping up to be the year of a debut album, currently and fervently in the works.
From glitzy stage garb to large-scale choreographies and perhaps even jazz standards someday down the line, what matters is not so much genre as feeling. The feeling that drives the most noble of challenges one can undertake—to share a life, to put forth something from it and in turn share that with the world. Love.
