About Monster Zoku Onsomb
From the cultural swamps of Australia’s most gleaming citadel, crawl Monster Zoku Onsomb! A Brisbane based ensemble who have forged their own sound from the shattered pieces of kitsch retrodelica and contemporary bass culture (retrofuturism anybody?). MZO! have no real contemporaries in Australia to which they can be compared, and they deserve more than a lazy string of genre comparisons. They are musically driven by art - action - empathy, and they are an unbeatable fiesta live! .. injecting every venue that can hold them, and any crowd that can take them, with infectious energy. You wont know what it was but You WILL smile & You WILL dance.
MZO! was formed from 3 different entities : The Nam-Shub of Enki - a producer responsible for some of Australia’s most inventive electronic music of the 90’s and beyond. Kunt - a female noise performance duo renowned for outrageous live performances, and Miss P Leisure - a DJ and promoter whose kooky selections ranged from the strangest soundtracks, 60’s surf / strip music to industrial beats.
As separate entities they were well known to Brisbane electronic party goers as being some of the city's most motivated electronic practitioners. Together they were to become unstoppable! Lashing the audience with sprays of noise, bass, sparks and fake blood, they formulated a style of live performance that combined programmed sounds, dance moves, synchronised visuals and live instruments that made their shows an instant success with people who had short attention spans.
Late in 2004 the 5 person ensemble combined their powers to produce their first E.P, the self titled "Monster Zoku Onsomb!". The E.P. was almost all composed from .50 cent bargain bin record samples and it laid out a unique sound that combined kitsch psychobilly rhythms with rave and grime sensibilities. It was a success in underground Australia, and it even found its way to the UK where Death$ucker Records discovered it and pressed the first MZO! 12” E.P. It was a sell out pressing and was played by DJs the world over, including Radio One presenter Mary Anne Hobbs proclaiming it her ‘record of the week’ on the BBC’s Breezeblock radio show in 2005.
At the end of 2004 Kunt left MZO! to concentrate on their own productions and reside in other locations around the world.
So, in the winter of 2005, following on from the success of the Death$ucker 12”, and now joined by MC/guitarist/dancer - Senior Tasty Taste & dancer/keyboardist - Sharkie Bubba, they decided to head overseas to make some friends, play some shows and to RAVE! MZO! under took their first self funded tour of Europe, the UK, Japan and Russia. Along the way they built a formidable reputation as being party starters and a live powerhouse of crazy performance and music.
From accidental beginnings, and now with a taste for shoving their sound and energy down peoples throats, MZO! produce their debut full length album “Attack” which went onto solidify their reputation for idiosyncratic sounds and a manic cut up sample and vocal style. For the first time MZO! integrated Miss P Leisure’s vocals into the mix and began indoctrinating their fans with their anthems. They embarked on another tour of Europe in 2006, to promote the album and a second 12” E.P. on Death$ucker Records. They moved from playing small clubs to larger renowned club nights and festivals such as Bangface in London, Bashout in Bristol and the Elevate Festival in Austria.
In 2008 MZO! release their third album - “Earth Eaters”. Co-Released on Acid Somavar & Solnze Records : Russia's most diverse labels. Acid Samovar being Russia's breakcore evangelists; and Solnze, the label behind Messer Chups and Russia's fertile neo-exotica scene. Earth Eaters breaks new ground with its pop experiments while it maintains its rave-up bass attacks and it sees the band finding new ways to expand on their sampledelic roots.
In 2009 MZO! hit the road in "3D Mode" and tour the vinyl release of the Earth Eaters album on Death$ucker Records. This year also heard the Earth Eaters remix album. It featured over 20 remixes by artists from all over the globe including Cursor Miner(UK), Xanapticon(USA), and Black Lung(AUST).
2011 The Nam Shub of Enki releases his 5th solo album PHREE on Berlin label Cock Rock Disco. And a new project was born : the Hi Freqs are 3 of the MZO! exploring a more sinister and occult theme. Hi Freqs perform at the Glade Festival in the UK and are signed the to release the NAM SHUB & the HI FREQS "YES" on vinyl on Australia's Retort Records.
2012 finds MZO! in their studio finishing off their 4th record “Kraka Boom . . Dumb in the face of Doom!” and preparing to head to the UK to perform at BANG FACE WEEKENDER with Aphex Twin! It is a shame that Miss P ruptured her achilles tendon while in training for the tour. But she wasn't going to miss out on Bangface and endured the 6 week tour, pushed around in a wheelchair by the band - occasionally finding herself up upside down after tequila binges on wheels!
In 2014 the german crew form Fusion Festival make contact and the band make the journey to perform in New Zealand at the Germans’ sister - Off The Radar Festival. After making a good impression, they accept the invitation to make the journey over to perform at Fusion itself!
What a festival!!
2015 they go back to NZ, support PEACHES and make friends with Jungle Love - a young crew creating a boutique festival experience north of Brisbane - how weird for them to book MZO!?
2016 back to Fusion Festival and off to Boomtown in the UK. Once back home they are joined by the hardest man in speedcore; The Berzerker - as their live drummer, enter- Toxo Plazmoso!
MZO! continue to build new audiences in their homeland .. people are discovering just how fun this unexplainable messy bunch can be.. even if they cant brand them.. See you on the dance floor :)
