About Among Wolves

*************************************************** "our star purveyors of lush americana, among wolves" brightest young things *************************************************** it's hard to avoid the massive shadow the beach boys have cast across almost every sunny short wave synth harmony sung since. to make matters worse, brian wilson and crew also cornered the market for complex production arrangements, compacting multi-layered vocals and unorthodox instrumentation into a simple-sounding pocket symphony. as you're reading this, bmore's among wolves are putting together their own endless summer, recording and performing material for a promising sophomore lp. not sure how they get inspiration for these vibrations in the city that reads, but the jams below are tighter than mcnulty and a handle of jameson. have a taste. butter team - will 3/13/08 *************************************************** show reviews *************************************************** among wolves put on the best performance of the night. their music is fresh and unheard of in my mind. who can blend experimental indie pop rock with synthesizers seamlessly with straight up country rock? among wolves. they threw it down, even throwing a johnny cash cover into the mix when they did the band member switch-a-roo (bass player played drums-piano player played bass- drummer played lead guitar and sang). if you get a chance, please go check them out...they put on a show that is worth every cent. pasta primavera - 1/12/07 lo-fi social club *************************************************** our pastappreciation (yeah, i made that up) for among wolves has been well documented here and here, so i'm just gonna give you some quick hits from their 8x10 show last night: billy tiedeken is a trooper. he has been fighting laryngitis for two weeks, but still tried his best to make it through the set. sadly, he lost the battle with his throat. these guys clearly love playing together. they constantly joke and laugh. it's refreshing to see a band that really likes playing shows. pasta primavera 1/30/08 8 x 10 *************************************************** album reviews *(a short list)* *************************************************** "...good ole charm city has gained some props from the 'big media'. i can't really disagree, partly because we're based in baltimore, but mainly because there's some great music coming out of here. tons of variety....indie, folk, hardcore, club, electronic, experimental...screamo. dan deacon, celebration, animal collective, the death set, wye oak, double dagger, and among wolves (one of our faves) just to name a few." rolling stone magazine *************************************************** "...there's just been a void of musicians that make music cooped up in a basement while downing bottles of whiskey and luckily, among wolves fill that void with a sound that's as much the beach boys as it is howlin' wolf." dan kagan, panda toes *************************************************** "among wolves mixes a little beechwood sparks, with a little sadies and a touch of jayhawks to get at their hybrid sunny california-jangle-pop meets midwestern americana rock." songs: illinois *************************************************** "among wolves is not what you might expect out of alt-country... indeed this collection of tunes is accessible, digestible, and yet firmly to the left of anything you’d ever hope to find popping up in the mainstream (or underground for that matter). devilishly clever, you wonder if they were at that famous crossroads along with robert johnson making a deal too." smother *************************************************** "but the band is at its best when at its most original, and coincidentally, most country. tunes like “hard to die” and “seems to me” are driven by free-and-easy backbeats and textured instrumentals from the lap steel and banjo. and even though the coarse flashiness of haywood’s delivery and the droning, stoner-rock guitars of “black eyed susan” recall yo la tengo, the song explodes nicely into three shout-n-clap-along choruses." robbie whelan, baltimore urbanite *************************************************** "who can blend experimental indie pop rock with synthesizers seamlessly with straight up country rock? among wolves... they put on a show that is worth every cent." pasta primavera *************************************************** "among wolves’ self-titled album is an impressive blend of the experimental and the accessible... highly recommended." independent clauses *************************************************** "among wolves provides the perfect grizzly beach boy/house harmonies to start and end your days." butter team *************************************************** "we start with an ethereal soothing sound, then some well-timed hand claps traveling into a country twang that made me grimace." score magazine *************************************************** "baltimore guys who seem like they play truly cos’ they love it. the kind guys who probably don’t care if they ever get signed to a big label and practice 4 times a week for 8 hours at a clip. i hear bits of my morning jacket and neil young. i really liked jason butcher’s “hard to die.” dagger zine *************************************************** "the musicians could be from next door, or from 2000 miles away in california, or 2000 miles in the other direction in massachussetts. universal american dance music. the shout-out tune, when we’re dead” slows down the dance and features more flavors as we hear “the tree are on fire” and visit small town america and hear the “church bells ringing from the steeple in your town.” eartaste *************************************************** "3 am(new among wolves demos)" baby gorilla said... i'm just a boy among wolves, but after buying the album, i feel like a man. thanks bt for bringing them into my life today. march 13, 2008 10:46 am New EP, "Separations and Other Loves", out now!
