About The Fisherman & The Sea

“This song is career suicide!” –
Social media and Big Tech exposed at its core on The Fisherman & The Sea’s new single "Botify The People"

Inspired by Jeff Orlowski’s Netflix docu/drama “The Social Dilemma” – an eye-opening critique of social media and its effects on our psyche – and Tom Gray’s #BrokenRecord campaign aiming to fix streaming payouts to artists, Helsinki-based The Fisherman & The Sea’s first single and title track off sophomore album “Botify The People” practically wrote itself. The song conjures up an eerie marriage between Bond theme and alt rockers And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, while getting the lyrical journey of the album underway through the eyes of a fresh recruit at a Big Tech company being slowly stripped of all their reservations towards the company’s dubious policies.
“This song is career suicide. Yes, it’s allegoric, but it is quite obviously about Spotify and how they’re exploiting indie artists, and even mentions them by name. So no, I don’t expect to get playlisted” laughs singer-songwriter Jon Fisherman. “But that’s exactly why this conversations deserves more of a platform. The amount of sway Big Tech has over our daily behaviour, our work and our personal discovery is significant and should never go unchecked” he adds on a more serious note.
The lyrical journey of the album starting on this first single is mirrored by its music video; a first act to a string of three music videos forming a short film including the next two singles off the album. The visual story starts on precisely the same premise as the lead single itself but quickly unfolds to tell the tale of the album as a whole. Written and directed by Jon Fisherman himself, the short film and its distinctive visual style are a nod to Robert Rodriguez’ silver screen adaptation of Frank Miller’s “Sin City” comic as well as Zack Snyder’s “300”, blending live acting on camera with comic book elements and visuals. Part two “Scream Into The Void” will be released on February 25th and the final part “But The Boyt Is Dead!” together with the album on April 8th.

“One of the best international bands we’ve ever heard”

…said Los Angeles Music Critic’s Bob Leggett of The Fisherman & The Sea’s 2019 debut “The Hurt & The Humour”, while Desibeli’s Mika Roth saw a “very strong debut album promising a bright future”. Never one for resting on his laurels Jon Fisherman has already released 48 songs since 2017’s debut EP “Beggar Princess”, including 5 EP’s, two standalone singles, an album, a cover’s album and a host of member specials to his e-mail list – before ever commencing work on sophomore album “Botify The People”.
After spending 2017 through 2019 on the road gradually building a fanbase and a band around him playing shows in Southern Finland and abroad in the Baltics, the fully fleshed out fivepiece now featuring Tuukka Kauppinen on guitar, Joel Himanen on keyboards, Tommi Ranta on bass and Karza Härkönen on drums entered the studio on a particularly fateful day in March 2020. The COVID lockdown issued that day saw the album recording sessions brought to an abrupt halt until they were finally picked up again and mostly finished in 2021.
Those recordings are currently scheduled for release in 2023, while in the meantime the band tour and promote “Botify The People” – entirely a product of the COVID lockdown that forced the band on a break in the first place.

Carbon neutral physical album

As the icing on the cake The Fisherman & The Sea have decided to make the whole physical album manufacturing process carbon neutral, by using the most environmentally friendly packaging possible and compensating for all the project’s CO2 emissions via compensate.com.
