About Marcus Lowry
Marcus Lowry is a Canadian guitarist, composer and producer based in Montreal. Since earning his Bachelor’s degree in jazz performance from the University of Montreal in 2017, Marcus has worked with a wide array of Canadian and international jazz, folk and pop artists, such as Diane Tell, Belle Grand Fille, The Great Novel, Alex Le Blanc, Aaron Dolman, Cédric Vieno and Marthe Halvorsen.
He is currently working on his debut solo album, “Time, Time, Time”, on which he will be playing guitar and singing his own music and lyrics. It will be produced by the beloved Canadian musician and producer Joe Grass, recipient of two Félix awards and multiple Juno nominations.
Marcus is also one half of the aptly named avant-folk duo, Gen & Marcus. In 2019, they co-produced and released their first album, “Warden”, to local and critical acclaim. The following year, Marcus served as the producer and musical arranger of Belle Grand Fille’s 2nd album, “Nos Maisons”, which also received widespread praise.
Marcus’ musical journey began at the age of six, when he began studying the violin under Anne Richard of the Laval Symphony Orchestra. He completed both the Vincent D’Indy and McGill Conservatory programs on the violin before deciding, at the age of 10, to trade his violin in for the guitar. In 2010, “Chester”, the indie-rock group that he founded, took home first prize at the Exposure Music Festival, which pushed Marcus into a life-long pursuit of music-making. To that end, Marcus is always seeking to deepen and broaden his artistic practice, and continues to evolve through private study with renowned contemporary guitarists, including Julian Lage, Gilad Hekselman, Ben Monder and Mike Stern.
Marcus continues to collaborate with other artists at home in Montreal and around the globe, all-the-while devoting himself to the creation of his own work.
