About Civil Wray Music

Civil Wray marks a personal and professional change for Andrea de Boer. After many years of recording, performing and touring to support her album, 2009’s Grin as blueVenus, she’s pushing her music and career to a new and exciting level.

Producer Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre, Holly Mcnarland, Jill Barber), along with guitarist Champagne James Robertson, bassist Devon Henderson, Robbie Grunwald on piano and keys, and Joshua Van Tassel on drums and percussion, worked with Andrea to develop new sounds and textures, offering an indie rock vibe and a twinge of country that intensifies her trademark smoky vocals. “Numb” the first single is an upbeat, surprisingly sultry pop track that has Andrea sounding more vibrant and vixen-ish than ever before. Infusing a lush, Latin dance-pop vibe, “Fie” displays de Boer’s dexterous vocal range over a lush, full tropical template of orchestral synths. On “Don’t Make Me,” de Boer looks to Bobbie Gentry’s iconic “Ode to Billie Joe” for inspiration, adopting Southern Gothic sentimentality.

Andrea’s decision to perform under the name Civil Wray signifies both a personal and musical transformation. “I stand up for myself on this album,” she smiles, noting that the road towards writing and recording Civil Wray (out May 2017) was often rocky, but rewarding. “It’s about discovering meaning,” she explains, “and having the understanding that all the different people and experiences you have had will eventually combine themselves into art.”
