About Flo Chase Music
Flo Chase is an indie pop singer-songwriter and soulful crooner inspired by the striking sounds of Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver, born to French parents and raised mostly in Australia before making the trek to Los Angeles. Since the early age of seven when Chase started learning his first instrument - piano, he felt a connection with music right away. At 12, his family moved to Australia. Not knowing a single word of English, he fully immersed himself in music - a place he could find comfort and express himself. Shortly after, Chase started taking vocal lessons and learning composition, and soon later taught himself to play drums, banjo, harmonica, bass and ukulele. From then, the multi-instrumentalist was all in.
To make it official, Chase pursued a Bachelor of Music Performance at the JMC Academy in Sydney, Australia. After touring the local circuit, he released his debut EP ironically called Le Debut (2017) featuring the single “Lonely River,” which quickly reached over 100K streams and 250K video views. In 2018, Chase knew it was time to make a leap full-time into the music industry and what better place than Los Angeles. The “American Dream” was something always on Chase’s mind and he felt it was the right moment to take a chance, move to the states and make that dream a reality. Unfortunately he encountered a major hurdle which inspired his single “Kiss You Goodbye” produced by ARIA Award winning record producer Wayne Conolly.
“I was going through a really rough time when the inspiration to write ‘Kiss You Goodbye’ came across,” Chase recalls. “Long story short, after coming back to the US on an ESTA visa and spending over thirty hours locked up in the LAX US Department of Homeland Security cell, I was sent back home and was advised to come back once my visa got approved. This was a big change of plans for the next few months, as I was now back home waiting and praying for my performer’s visa to get approved.”
Atwood Magazine’s review of “Kiss You Goodbye” states, “Chase’s voice, although speaking English, still rings out in that undeniably French cadence. When he starts, it’s immediate; he has no time left to stay, therefore neither does the audience to sit and be pensive.”
Chase, now living in Los Angeles, has created a record reflecting that experience of leaving his home, family and friends to start fresh and embrace the unknown. His debut album titled Toi is symbolic of the solitude and feelings that came with saying goodbye and pursuing his dream.
“I feel listeners will still find a ground of resonance from my first EP Le Debut, however this new record feels even more personal to me for multiple reasons,” he says. “Over the years, I believe I have grown as an artist and man in general while the experience of moving to Los Angeles and re-adapting to a new culture and way of life has definitely allowed me to dig deeper into my feelings.”
Growing up, he remembers listening to Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel, and Bob Dylan, all playing a major role in how he looked at his own songwriting. Later, he became enamored by artists John Mayer, Ben Howard, Jack Johnson and an Australian local favorite indie band The Paper Kites, which inspired the singer-songwriter on the album Toi.
“I hope my fans will find some sense of relatedness, comfort and cheerfulness in this new record,” says Chase. I hope it will be one of those records fans will turn to whenever they feel the urge to escape the real world even if it’s for a minute, and also one they will smile and dance to.”
Toi meaning “You” in French features 12 emotionally-driven tracks including Chase’s very first song in French, also the title track. The album truly spotlights his blend of influences ranging in folk and pop, and the delicate addition of his native language has made the record that much more special. One thing is for sure, Chase doesn’t disappoint when it comes to creating music you’ll naturally sing-along to. For fans of John Mayer, Ben Howard and Vance Joy, the album Toi gives you that same heart flutter and tickle down your spine. The record also includes previous released track “Spinning Wheel” which has over 200K Streams, and singles “Lies,” “Never Came Back,” “More of You” and “Toi.”
“I simply chose these songs not only because they felt great to me but also since together they really give a great picture of the tone and emotional spectrum of the record, “ says Chase. “‘Lies’ and ‘Never Came Back’ show the more frustrated yet fun side of the record; while ‘Toi’ and ‘More of You’ frame the more emotional substance of the album.”
Toi was recorded at Barking Owl Sound in Santa Monica, co-produced with Chase’s good friend and extremely talented music composer and producer, Houston Fry. Chase’s older brother Theo also played a huge part in the record assisting with production and offering creative feedback on each track. Between having Houston Fry, Theo, mixing engineer Kolton Lee (Kaleo, Foy Vance, Shania Twain, Niall Horan) and GRAMMY Award winning master engineer Joe Laporta (Shawn Mendes, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, The Weekend), the collective music genius is shown through this quality record.
