Blue Foundation is a Danish electronic dream pop duo formed in 1999 by singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Tobias Wilner amid the rainy, grey streets of Copenhagen—long before it became the vibrant city it is today. Inspired by Mark E. Smith’s experimental spirit with The Fall, Wilner initially led a rotating cast of musicians to fuel continuous creative evolution. Since 2010, the core has centered on Wilner and producer/multi-instrumentalist Bo Rande, who now split their time between Brooklyn and Copenhagen.

Known for their independently produced music and Wilner’s cohesive artistic vision—he creates all artwork and directs most videos—Blue Foundation crafts a distinctive, cinematic sound blending electronic, ambient, shoegaze, and dream pop into lush, hypnotic soundscapes. Their ethereal melodies and haunting vocals have earned critical acclaim: Clash Music calls it “blissful, dream-like electronic pop,” Far Out Magazine praises their “deeply hypnotic blend of cinematic soundscapes,” and Line of Best Fit describes their work as “a celestial escapade.”

Blue Foundation’s music has resonated far beyond indie circles, attracting hip hop artists who’ve sampled their songs in Lil Durk’s “Fly High” featuring French Montana and Young Thug’s “She Notice.” Their evocative tracks also enrich films, TV shows, and commercials worldwide, enhancing storytelling with immersive sonic textures. Their international hit “Eyes on Fire,” featured in the Twilight series, is hailed as a gateway into their universe and a timeless anthem—capturing raw emotion and “cold weather nostalgia.” The track’s haunting “hoa hoa hoa” vocals have become emblematic of this feeling, according to The Independent UK.

Their latest album, Close To The Knife, recorded across New York, Shanghai, Copenhagen, and Dalian, marks a profound evolution—exploring themes of betrayal, self-destruction, and complex love through a haunting, ethereal lens. Featuring new vocalists Nina and Scarlet Rae alongside longtime collaborators, the album blends dream pop, space pop, and shoegaze into a deeply immersive journey.

Beyond Blue Foundation, Wilner remains musically prolific—leading projects like New York United and Tachys, performing with shoegaze band Ghost Society, and composing for film and TV. Meanwhile, Rande contributes to acclaimed ensembles such as CTM and Choir of Young Believers.
