Greenland

Formed in Washington, DC in 2006, Greenland is Tony Acampora (bass, guitar, vocals), Jamie Green (bass, guitar, vocals), Rishi Chakrabarty (guitar), and Mike Duran (drums, vocals). Initially a post-punk / power pop hybrid floating their way through the blog rock era, they gained a reputation as an always fun and occasionally kind of brilliant live act with lyrics that were alternately comic and disarming. They recorded 7 albums ranging from super-layered REM pastiche with super-dry vocals to live-recorded acid country, from semi-deranged feedback confessionals to cringey noise box Neil Young impressions. Tony Acampora's open and chordal bass style, together with Mike Duran's head groove-grafted drums, formed the base of Greenland's slow simmer from 2006-2017 (Rishi and Jamie's Feelies-esque guitars being the marmalade and the hollandaise, respectively). On their latest album, Real Waves, the script has flowered and flipped, with Tony and Jamie splitting songwriting down the middle. Alternating between fluttering acoustic 12-string prog jams and lake-surface nylon compositions, Real Waves opens up new territory for Greenland, who have finished warming up, and are now negotiating drink tickets with the door guy.
