About Magnets
“Simmering Indie-pop” - Buffablog
“Steeped in retro love” - Happy Mag
Crafting harmonies at the intersection of art and science, MAGNETS is the solo project of multi-disciplinary, Siobhan McGinnity.
Trained as a classical pianist from the age of 7, raised on the harmonies of Enya and raw energy of Hole, Siobhan’s musical journey is a unique odyssey. Moving from town to town, as disparate as Karratha to Christmas Island, it wasn’t until Siobhan settled in Naarm that her passion for indie-pop took root. The allure of the keytar sparked a realisation that her future lay elsewhere. For years, Siobhan honed her craft as a backing vocalist and synth player, supporting esteemed artists such as Henry Wagons and Ali Barter, before finally taking the leap to her own solo venture.
MAGNETS sound is characterised by textural layers, chorus pedals, driving rhythm and a healthy dose of nostalgia. Her debut EP, “Perpetual Motion,” garnered Triple J Unearthed support, over 50,000 streams and led to the signing of a publishing deal with Gaga Music. A dip in output followed these successes, as Siobhan paused to prioritise changes in health. The pull of music omnipresent, she returned to the studio in 2022 with generous backing and access support from Creative Victoria’s Music Works program, joining forces with ARIA nominee and producer Terry Mann. The result? A dopaminergic sparkle of sound, that promises to captivate hearts and minds.
As a disabled artist, Siobhan is a staunch advocate for the ecology and equality of Australia’s music scene. In the past she has served on Music Victoria’s Women’s Advisory Panel, educated for Full Stop Australia to prevent violence in music venues, produced captivating International Women’s Day showcases with the support of iconic brands such as Levi’s, and presented on many a panel for disability access and inclusion. Her groundbreaking PhD thesis, “Hearing Injury in the Music Industry,” earned multiple accolades from the prestigious National Hearing Conservation Association in the USA. And in 2021, she produced the inaugural “Music Makers” program for Arts Access Victoria, creating a unique mentorship platform for Deaf and disabled music professionals.
MAGNETS isn’t just music; it’s an electrifying force for change, a fusion of art and science that transcends. Siobhan is a true magnetic presence in the Australia music landscape.
