About Lakshay Mohan & Aayush Mohan

Lakshay Mohan & Aayush Mohan Gupta's performances of Hindustani Classical Music have won the hearts of audiences at prestigious classical music festivals and venues across the world, some of which are - The Grammy Museum, Los Angeles ; India Fine Arts Academy, San Diego ; Thyaghraja Festival, Cleveland ; Learn Quest Music Conference, Boston ; The Abbey Theatre, Columbus to name a few. Their performances in India include Delhi Classical Music Festival; Gunidas Sangeet Sammelan, Mumbai ; Saptak Festival, Ahmedabad ; RIMPA Festival at Ravi Shankar Centre, New Delhi ; Taj Mahotsav, Agra ; Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata ; Ganga Mahotsav, Varanasi ; All Bengal Music Conference , Kolkata ; Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal.

After listening to Lakshay & Aayush at the Ravi Shankar Centre in the year 2012, Pandit Ravi Shankar, on seeing their talent and dedication, decided to launch them for their debut USA tour under his foundation. This tour materialized in 2015 in which Lakshay & Aayush performed at many of the most prestigious music festivals and venues in the USA. Lakshay and Aayush are the first Indians to be invited to perform at The Grammy Museum, Los Angeles for the opening of the exhibition – “Ravi Shankar: A life in music”. This concert featured their collaboration with American cellist Barry Philips.

They have been given a strong foundation in the Maihar style of playing by eminent musicians of Maihar Gharana – Padmabhushan Smt. Sharan Rani and Pt. Uma Shankar Mishra. They have also studied under Pt. Balwant Rai Verma, the senior most disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Thereafter they have studied extensively for many years under acclaimed Sarod maestro Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar. Comprehensive training in the intricacies of ‘Dhrupad ang’ (style) from Padmashri Gundecha Brothers has added a new dimension to their music.

Their recent albums include “The Majestic court” by Times Music and “Echoes From the Yellow Land” by Mystica Music.

They manage to strike a balance between technical brilliance, emotional content, raga purity and aesthetic awareness that is becoming very rare in the realm of Indian Classical Instrumental Music. True to the spirit of their music, The Hindu wrote about one of their performances:

“They impressed with their serious musical attitude and no-nonsense approach. It was particularly satisfying that they made no attempt to play up to the gallery by showing off unnecessary virtuosity though their taiyyari and neat phrasing was there for all to see.”

Having developed an ingenious and deeply personal interpretation of their gharana’s rich musical heritage, Lakshay and Aayush have evolved their own unique style of playing jugalbandi and have won critical acclaim by connoisseurs as well as music critics. Their duet demonstrates two musical souls perfectly tuned into each other’s aesthetic vision and imagination.

On their recent collaboration with Grammy Award Winner Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt - “The String Trinity”, which brought together for the first time in the history of Indian Music, the three plucked string instruments – Sitar, Sarod and Mohan Veena, the Millennium Post wrote - “The Capital was mesmerised by magic of strings”. They were recently invited by the Ramakrishna Mission of Delhi, Jaipur, Bangalore and Arunachal to perform during the closing ceremony of Swami Vivekananda’s 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrations.
