About Theory

Progressive Heavy Metal band from Denmark

THEORY was formed in 2011 by guitarist Odin L. Madsen and drummer Martin Kilic. Right from the start the band had frequent replacements to the line up while all the songs of the debut album took shape, carefully carried out and prepared by the duo. In 2015 the guitarist Esben Dueholm (ex-Rapid Dominance), and bass player Kim Mikkelsen (ex-Twilight - which later became Beyond Twilight) joined in. The recording of what would become "The Art of Evil" began that same year, but the band got a chaotic start when the original vocalist chose to leave just before the planned vocal recordings.

With stubborn willingness a difficult search for a new and skilled metal vocalist began. The hunt went to all of Europe, but luckily the new session singer would be found in Denmark, Copenhagen. Nicklas Sonne was at that time a relatively unknown name in Denmark, but a YouTube cover of Dream Theater's' classic "Another Day" immediately convinced the band that Sonne was an extremely worthy candidate:

The contact was established and the respect was mutual when Sonne had heard the demo songs and announced:
"Theory has touched my progressive metal heart and I couldn’t resist making this album with these awesome guys. Great playing and great songwriting from A to Z".

With Sonne on board, the band had not only found a singer, but also a talented producer to make the most of the recorded material. And as a final mention the band contacted the legendary keyboard player Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater) who agreed to act as guest soloist on the track "Strangers Descent".

In the fall of 2016 "The Art of Evil" album was ready for release. After a while carefully considering offers from interested labels, the band eventually chose to go DIY and published the album digitally through the Danish distribution service Gateway Music on February 16, 2017 and the physical CD was released at the end of April 2017.

November 1st 2023 the new album "Obsidian Haze" was released.
