About After Midnight
After Midnight (aka Classic Clapton) were formed in 1985 in Newcastle upon Tyne, taking their name from the JJ Cale song. They also perform the occasional acoustic gigs in the north east.
There have been many highlights over the years, including support slots with Doctor Feelgood and Steve Marriott. Since 2000, the band has concentrated on their Eric Clapton tribute concerts, performed at theatres all over the UK, under the name CLASSIC CLAPTON. Highlights have included The Royal Festival Hall and Glastonbury Festival. In the past few years they have performed numerous concerts in Europe including Spain, Estonia, Holland & France.
In 2009 they appeared at St Andrews Auditorium in Mumbai. They were invited back for 3 more concerts in India in 2016. On the final night of the tour Classic Clapton performed in front of 3500 people in the open air sports arena known as Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana, Mumbai. In 2017 they appeared in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
In the past 39 years After Midnight has become something of a rock institution.
They have released three albums. Firstly “THE MUSIC OF ERIC CLAPTON” contains brilliant cover-versions of 17 Clapton Classics. Their second album is a double CD ''CLASSIC CLAPTON Unplugged'' recorded at Belfast Waterfront Hall. In 2005 they released their third album “CLASSIC CREAM” – featuring 20 covers of songs by the sixties supergroup.
TYNE TEES TELEVISION made a programme about After Midnight, called 'COVER THEIR TRACKS'. They filmed the band's concert at Newcastle Opera House, in front of 600 ecstatic fans. It was shown in August 2000 leading to national recognition.
After Midnight comprises 4 excellent musicians:- Mike Hall (lead vocals/guitar), Gregg Strettle (drums) and Dave Robson (bass guitar /backing vocals). Dave is a former member of chart band Geordie. In fact he was with them at the time Brian Johnson left to join AC/DC. Steve Hutchinson has recently re-joined the band on keyboards & backing vocals. He was a member of The Animals for 6 years during the 1990’s alongside original members Hilton Valentine & John Steel. He previously played with After Midnight from 2003 - 2005.
After Midnight continue to perform their CLASSIC CLAPTON concerts around the UK & Europe.
Unfortunately, the success of their tribute gigs has meant that local north east gigs have become few and far between. In the past 39 years the band has played numerous sell-out concerts at most of the north east theatres.
