The Vagary

(ENGLISH below) THE VAGARY is een indie rock band opgericht in 2011 bestaande uit Thijs Havens (zang, toetsen, gitaar), Julien Staartjes (gitaar), Lukas Verburgt (drums) en Bowie Verschuuren (bas). Thijs en Julien hadden eerder als leden van o.a. Saelors, Les Singes en Light Light al naam gemaakt in het Amsterdamse bandcircuit maar met The Vagary kwam voor het viertal ruimte voor een gedeelde obsessie voor de eenvoud van popmuziek en de live energie van rauwe, gestripte rock. Zo ontstond al gauw een eigen sound “ergens tussen Bryan Ferry’s jaren 80 synthpop en The Velvet Underground”. Kort na oprichting speelde The Vagary al veel shows waaronder voorprogramma’s voor o.a. Kurt Vile en Pete Doherty. Dit leverde de band een ijzersterke live reputatie op die eind 2012 werd bezegeld met het winnen van de Amsterdamse Popprijs (“Het plaatje klopt, de songs zijn spannend en de sound is goed”). De band trok intussen ook de aandacht van Glamcult en FOAM Magazine die hun beide vroegen voor (inter-)nationale campagnes en events. Snel volgde de onvermijdelijke DWDD-minuut en in de zomer van 2013 werd aan opnames gewerkt, waarna de band tekende bij platenlabel [PIAS]. “Time Machine” was eind 2013 hun eerste single en leidde tot optredens bij 3FM en een plaats op Eurosonic Noorderslag. Daar werden de verwachtingen ingelost: "De nieuwe cooler-than-cool band uit Amsterdam heet The Vagary (...) Hier staat een volledig overtuigende band (...) Nederland heeft er weer een band bij die het kan maken in het buitenland" - OOR - "...leveren een onwijs strakke set af (...) Noorderslag was een uitstekend visitekaartje" - 3voor12- Hoewel de door de pers gemaakte vergelijkingen met The Cars, The Virgins, Tom Petty en The Strokes niet onbegrijpelijk zijn, gaat The Vagary voor een eigen, tijdloze combinatie van bombastische gitaren en synths, met een sluimerende melancholie als bij een zonsondergang in een verlaten stad. Het debuutalbum SALUTE verscheen op 22 augustus 2014 en de pers schreef o.a. het volgende: "muziek die zowel luchtig als rijk aan nuance is (...)Hun liedjes zijn sterk (...) SALUTE vangt het live-geluid van een soepel spelende rockband heerlijk los op de plaat." (★★★★) - NRC - "situeren zich, heel slim, dankzij sfeervolle, catchy songs ergens tussen de vervloekte mainstream en rammelende indie. Het resultaat: één van de leukere Nederlandse debuutalbums van dit jaar." (★★★★) - Nieuwe Revu - "prachtig vormgegeven vinyl (...) synths worden naar hartelust over snijdende gitaren gedrapeerd. Een duidelijke uitschieter zit er niet bij maar dat zegt vooral iets over het gemiddelde niveau (...) The Vagary heeft dus gewoon alles best goed voor elkaar." (★★★★) - Music Maker - In het najaar van 2014 volgde een uitgebreide Nederlandse clubtour en momenteel werkt de band aan nieuw materiaal. Thijs and Julien had been around in the alternative band scene for some time as members of Saelors, Les Singes and Light Light but with The Vagary, the four could explore a shared obsession with the simplicity of pop and the live energy of raw, stripped-down rock music. This lead them to a distinctive sound “somewhere between Bryan Ferry’s 80s synth pop and the Velvet Underground”. Soon The Vagary played a lot of shows, opening for Pete Doherty and Kurt Vile among many others. This earned them a solid live reputation which they consolidated by winning the Amsterdam Pop Prize 2012 (“They look good, the songs are exciting and the sound is good” said the jury). Meanwhile they had caught the attention of VICE magazine, FOAM and Glamcult who asked them for events and (inter)national campaigns. In the spring of 2013, The Vagary made their inevitable national television debut on 'De Wereld Draait Door' and in the summer of that year, the band worked on recordings for their debut album. They got signed to record label [PIAS] and late 2013 saw the release of first single “Time Machine” which introduced the band to a national audience through airplay on 3FM. Soon thereafter they played Eurosonic Noorderslag 2014 where they lived up to the expectations; “The new cooler-than-cool band from Amsterdam is called The Vagary (...) fully convincing (...) Noorderslag was an excellent taste of things to come” - 3voor12 - Comparisons to The Cars, The Virgins, Tom Petty and The Strokes made by the press are understandable but The Vagary is after a very own, timeless combination of powerful guitars and synths, with a lingering melancholy like a sunset in a deserted city. Their Debut LP called SALUTE was released on August 22, 2014, receiving favorable reviews; "music that as fresh as it is rich in nuance (...) Their songs are strong (...) SALUTE captures the live-sound of a smoothly playing rock band beautifully on tape" (★★★★) - NRC - "situate themselves, very cleverly, right in between the mainstream and gritty indie thanks to atmospheric, catchy songs. There are no clear highlights but that says more about the overall quality (...) All in all, The Vagary has got it down."
